Reaching Out From Within

Reaching Out From Within Reaching Out From Within (ROFW) was established in 1982 in Kansas as an incarcerated-led program that Thousands of ROFW alumni are thriving since their release.

Reaching Out From Within (ROFW) sponsors 19 weekly groups in each prison in the state of Kansas, including the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth. In 2017, ROFW expanded to North Carolina through a generous gift from the Bob Barker Foundation. Since then the program has expanded to four prisons in the state of North Carolina. ROFW is for incarcerated men and women who seek to live a non-violent w

ay of life by learning life skills that will help them both inside the walls and as returning citizens into our communities. Members learn about Anger, Abuse, Respect, Prison Mentality, Communication, Listening and other subjects. Our program incorporates cognitive thinking best practices and moral and ethical formation. Members teach themselves and each other using a unique curriculum, called the Blue Book, that has been developed by inmates and volunteers. The 19-unit, 400-page Blue Book uses the Socratic method by presenting information and then posing questions that stimulate intense discussion. In the process, ROFW members question long-held beliefs, evaluate other value systems, and consider alternate behaviors to achieve life goals. As one ROFW member describes it: "The program instills in us all the power to take that first step of a thousand miles as a universal, united brotherhood from all walks of life, no matter what your crime, time, religion or race. It puts each of us on one accord, to CHANGE." In 2011 Reaching Out From Within participated with the Kansas Department of Corrections in the development of the Mentoring4Success program. ROFW is a lead mentoring organization within the Mentoring4Success program. ROFW mentors work one-on-one or in small groups with those on the inside during their last year of incarceration and through their first months as returning citizens.Members teach themselves and each other using a unique curriculum, called the Blue Book, that has been developed by inmates and volunteers. We are proud to announce the launch of a new reentry initiative designed to support justice-impacted individuals as they rebuild, reconnect, and thrive. The Returning Citizens Consortium fuses corrections, workforce, lived experience, and community partners.
This project is rooted in the understanding that successful reentry requires more than second chances—it requires healing, opportunity, and community. We believe that reentry is not just an individual journey—it is a community responsibility. Together, we can create pathways to restoration, resilience, and renewed purpose.

ROFW was grateful for an opportunity to share space and resources in the community. Thanks Candance J. Wesson for opening up the community to all the great resources available for justice involved individuals. The Barriers to Business summit was a great turnout, great collaboration, and a great cause. Ran into an ROFW alumni who shared the great moves he’s making and thanked the organizations members and volunteers. ROFW represents lasting impact and transformation!

ROFW spent this past week being hosted by The Bob Barker Foundation Kurtis Taylor and we were blown away. The room was filled with knowledge, connection, and impact. We left feeling more informed to continue our great work. The emcee SaulPaul Foundation was exciting and vulnerable and the keynote speaker Marcus Bullock was shared a powerful message on reaching back. Erik Daubert taught great lessons on donor stewardship and fundraising strategies. What a great time! Mary Ward Gregory Winship, M.A.

This year we awarded some of ROFWs finest.

Zephyr represented by Randy and Cheryl Reinhardt received the SuEllen Fried Humanitarian Award. The connection between ROFW and Zephyr runs long and deep. The Reinhardt's are true philanthropist giving not only financially but also leading the charge in second chance employment opportunities. We appreciate the constant support and mission alignment we have with Zephyr and we look forward to continuing in our partnership.

Awarding Russell Thompson the Courage to Change Impact Award was a no brainer. Russ has been volunteering since the 90's and has been a consistent annual donor of ROFW. Russ served on the board steering our vision for decades. He serves as the primary volunteer at Lansing minimum alongside his wife Maralee. We are grateful for Russ and his contributions to our members.

Jason Miles is an inspiration to anyone he meets and we excitedly awarded him the Greg Musselman Excellence in Action Award. Jason is the lead volunteer at Topeka Correctional Facility, long time board member, and leads our alumni groups. He's the embodiment of ROFW and we better for having him as apart of our work.
