If you've struggled with the soil in your yard, you're not alone! Soil challenges are a common complaint:

The clay soils of the Midwest are relics of the sea floor sediments that have been exposed for hundreds of millions of years. These soils are tightly compacted and drained of nutrients. For this reason, rainfall doesn’t pe*****te very far and surface applied fertilizers mostly run off with the rain.

Two things you can do to improve your soil:

Add Compost: Compost improves soil and plant health, helps your soil retain moisture, and helps increase the organisms in the soil. You can add compost to your lawn with a spreader, place it around trees to the edge of the tree canopy; and add compost in your garden beds before you plant in the Spring.

Improve Aeration: Aeration is the key to getting the soil in good shape. The bacteria, fungi and all the other living things in soil need to breath like every other kind of creature. Opening up the soil can be as simple as renting a machine called a core aerator. This machine cuts and lifts out cylinders from the yard. Getting the air into the soil alone is a good idea but adding compost to the holes is even better. Compost is known for loosening the soil and getting it deep within the core holes is perfect.

Pick up some compost at any of our five locations. Learn more at https://www.missouriorganic.com/compost.
