Heartland Conservation Alliance

Heartland Conservation Alliance We work with partners to protect, connect, and restore the Blue River watershed and its urban greenspaces for the benefit and enjoyment of all.

Protecting Places You Love

Heartland Conservation Alliance is an urban land trust that protects nature in Kansas City. We are currently focusing our efforts to improve the health of the Blue River and the surrounding communities. We work to advance justice and equity in our community where neighborhoods have been unfairly burdened with environmental challenges. Conserving Natural Areas
As a land

trust Heartland Conservation works with a multitude of partners to protect nature and green spaces in our city. We protect land with conservation easements, land ownership and support to restore and manage public lands. Convening our Community
We convene stakeholders to plan and discuss ways we can maximize opportunities and collaborations. We pool resources, develop tools and support regional conservation plans. Alliance members share a common goal to improve the health of the watershed and the communities that benefit from nature. Connecting People to Nature
We believe in power of the people. We are actively engaging the public to make nature in our city more accessible. We are educating landowners, land managers, neighborhoods, youth, adults, policy makers and conservation organizations about the benefits of nature and the need to protect green spaces.

Happy from Heartland Conservation Alliance. The Blue River's colorful and unique species reflect the diversity of Kansas City’s people—both are vital to healthy, thriving communities.

Just as the Blue River supports a rich diversity of species, Kansas City is strengthened by the diversity of its people. Together, both are fundamental to vibrant and thriving communities.

Restoration work continues to move forward along some of the Blue River corridor’s most challenging and overlooked riparian landscapes, as part of the project.

Environmental Works, Inc. continues invasive species removal and mechanical clearing efforts adjacent to the Dunbar/Leeds area on Tract 7 (8.82 acres) and Tract 9 (17.5 acres). Tract 7 is a riparian corridor (formerly Heart Drive-In Theatre) along the west banks of the Blue River just south of I-70 and Highway 40, while Tract 9 is visible from the Blue River Trail near Stadium Drive, just east of Harvesters off Leeds Trafficway. These less accessible corridors include wooded floodplains, mixed shrub zones, steep slopes, and areas impacted by illegal dumping and invasive plant growth.

Using forestry mulchers and handheld cutting equipment, crews are removing invasive species such as bush honeysuckle, autumn olive, multiflora rose, Callery pear, tree of heaven, winter creeper, Japanese hop, and Johnson grass to support healthier, more resilient riparian ecosystems.

Join HCA and Missouri Master Naturalist, Osage Trails Chapter Teala Sadler to witness the magical transition from day to night at Alex George Wetland along the Blue River Parkway. At dusk, we will begin our walk to meet the critters of the night emerging from their daytime slumber. We'll search for a variety of owl species, get to know our local bat population, and experience bioluminescent bugs that light up our skies.

Last Saturday, rain or shine, we had our annual Kayaking the Blue event! Even though the Blue River in the morning was moving too quickly for newer kayakers, our afternoon public sessions got to enjoy perfect kayak conditions - slow, steady, and shaded (thanks to cloud cover) . River levels obviously fluctuate with rain and in drier summer months kayaking can be a “drag” along more shallow reaches of the Blue River. Typically, April and May are good kayaking months and this past weekend the river didn’t disappoint!

This is part two of a monthly series highlighting the pillars and work being done in the Renewing the Blue: Restoring Land, Water, and Community Canopy project. This month we’re featuring Community Canopy, a core part of this project that is focusing on planting and stewarding native trees in areas they’re needed most to better the health of the Blue River and its communities.
