Outdoor Ethics- Heart of America Council

Outdoor Ethics- Heart of America Council Preparing everyone to be aware of their surroundings and the impacts made when thousands camp each year. Let's make a difference.

Building upon this foundation, the Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, Venturing, and Sea Scout programs all include outdoor stewardship, care for the environment, and Leave No Trace as part of their programs. At the Boy Scout and Varsity Scout levels, youth are encouraged to take leadership positions in encouraging proper outdoor ethics using the principles of Leave No Trace. Many Venturing crew

s have similarly adapted Leave No Trace principles to guide their outdoor recreation activities. Through the Outdoor Code and Leave No Trace, we can take responsibility for our own impacts. We can provide leadership to those around us to reduce their impacts by making good choices. Together, we can preserve and conserve our rich environmental heritage.

Our crew had a fantastic time at the 100th anniversary of Theodore Naish Scout Reservation! Thank to all the scouts and scouters who came by to chat with us, play our Outdoor Ethics game, checked out our new *passport cards* to earn the OE Awareness Award, as well as picked up our new business card to spread awareness about outdoor ethics!
If you are interested in having us visit your unit to do an awareness talk, please message us here, or via our email!

In keeping with our last post about storing food and disposing of waste properly, we would like to share picture with you taken in Lawrence, KS this week.
Someone left, dropped or purposely gave this squirrel a dorito chip. The squirrel was certainly not scared of the photographer. What if this was a bigger animal? A bear or a bobcat?

An animal that gets food from humans learns to expect it. That changes how it behaves — and where it goes looking. Animals that associate humans with food are more likely to end up in conflict situations. Feeding wildlife isn't kindness. It's a slow harm.

Let's add a few more! 🌎
□ Recycled (glass bottle, aluminum can, etc)
□ Repurposed a item (think, worn out jeans made into a bag for groceries)
□ Used a reusable water bottle
□ Planted NATIVE plants, or grasses to help increase wildlife habitat
□ Used reusable plates & utensils on campouts

We are one day away from Earth Day! 🌎 How do you plan to celebrate and help our environment? I have recently seen some rough outdoor spaces and wondered, what happen to "leaving things better than we found them?" I hope everyone can get out and do their good turn daily! Let's make Earth Day everyday! 🎉
Leave us a comment or a picture to let us know how you will celebrate!

You don't have to go to a national park to practice sustainability.

The choices you make every day — at home, in your neighborhood, on your commute — matter too.
