We had a great time splashing around today!

Perfect weather and great friends make for the ideal splash day. Whether it's running through the water or playing with pool toys, these activities promote enjoyment of leisure and independent decision-making.

Splash day is a perfect example of Recreation and Leisure, which is 1 of the 9 pillars of the Expanded Core Curriculum!

For some students, braille is one of the many skills learned to thrive in an academic setting and in life!

Compensatory Skills, such as braille, are skills students need to be able to access education and acquire academic skills, such as reading and writing. Other Compensatory Skills include tactile symbols and sign language, which also support individuals with visual impairments and other disabilities!✨

This is the first out of 9 components of the Expanded Core Curriculum. Which one will be next?

Shout-out to TVI Sarah Smith for all the amazing work she's done for our Bright Start Program.

Last October, CCVI launched Bright Start, a free program covering a variety of topics/events for families of children with visual impairments and other complex needs to attend.

Sarah took the lead for our Sensory-Friendly Storytime in Lee's Summit and did an amazing job adapting stories, creating hands-on activities, and engaging with all our attendees!

We look forward to more events like this starting this August and are excited to be offering a second location for Sensory Friendly Storytime for parents to attend. More details to come!🩷

Orientation & Mobility is much more than learning how to use a long white cane!

It also teaches children about body awareness, how to interpret sensory information (such as sounds, weather, & environmental textures/elements), and safely traveling.

You can practice O&M skills this summer by going on short walks and exploring the environment along the route, pointing out different sounds or smells, and practicing safe travel with the long white cane (if used)!
