A huge THANK YOU to all of our Union Members and Retirees who joined us last Saturday for our annual Establishment Day Celebration. We were honored to have Mayor Pro Tem join us in celebrating 50 years of Collective Bargaining Agreements!

City Workers are the backbone of KCMO. We're looking forward to negotiations and ensuring they receive the compensation and workplace protections they need and deserve.

What Do City Workers Do?
🌳 Keep Our Parks Beautiful
➕ Health Services like Testing, Treatment and even Food Safety
🚛 Trash, Recycling and Bulky Item Pickup
💧 Keep Our Water Safe and Clean
✈️ Clean, Maintain, Secure and Operate Buses at Our Airports
🛠️ Maintain City Fleet Vehicles
🏛️ Engage with Community Members
🛟 Keep Kids and Families Safe as Lifeguards and Recreational Specialists.. just to name a few!

Our office will be closed Thursday June 19th in recognition of Juneteenth.

We'd like to share some well-written words from our Union siblings at IATSE that honor the legacy of this day:

"The story of Juneteenth is intertwined with the American labor story. Newly emancipated African Americans became wage workers that faced a new dilemma of receiving a fair day of pay for a fair day of work. African Americans formed the Colored National Labor Union ('Colored' given by press at the time) in 1869 as a solution to being excluded from the founding of the National Labor Union. African Americans have been principal actors in the American labor story since the inception of unified labor forces in America.

The first 'Jubilee Day' celebration on June 19, 1866 was funded exclusively by newly emancipated working people that earned enough excess money to fund a celebration of their liberation. In 1872, through resilience and determination, a group of workers in Houston pooled funds to purchase a 10-acre plot of land to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. The park, known as Emancipation Park, was originally solely used for Juneteenth celebrations as the owners lacked funds to keep the park open year-round. The work that many of these workers found was in trades represented by labor unions, starting the path for freed men and women to eventually join the ranks of union workers."

The fight for equity in the workplace and beyond continues to this day.

We've made a lot of progress with new leadership in the past few years, and we want to keep the energy going into 2025. With negotiations on the horizon, our goals are to:

🤝 COLLABORATE: Workers from across all departments deserve to have their voices heard and their needs met. We encourage members to attend their monthly Union meetings so we can collaborate and make it happen together.

🙌 ELEVATE: City Workers are the backbone of KCMO! It's time their pay, benefits and workplace treatment is elevated to new heights to truly exemplify what all their hard work is worth.

Who keeps KCMO running during the biggest blizzard we’ve seen in over 60 years? CITY WORKERS! 💪🏾💪🏼💪🏾💪🏻

We’re proud to represent those who work tirelessly to keep our roads clear in extreme weather. Too often, the dangerous and strenuous work they do is taken for granted. It’s easy to do when City Workers are the backbone of our city’s functions, and their labor becomes so integral that they become invisible.

But this year, we’re putting them on the map and ask for your help to uplift the incredible contributions they make to our beautiful city!

We are grateful for our members and the City Workers who will continue to keep KMCO running as we enjoy time with our families. Contract items like Holiday Pay are essential to ensure that KCMO workers are fairly compensated for working holidays, or to be able to truly relax with their family, not worrying about missing pay.
