Recovering from Religion

Recovering from Religion Practical support for people considering a life outside of religious and supernatural belief. Welcome If this is you, we want to help you find your way out.

If you are one of the millions of people who have determined that religion no longer has a place in your life, this may be the right spot for you. Many people love the social support they get from religion, but can’t deal with all the illogical ideas they are required to espouse. It can be difficult to leave a religion because family and culture put so much pressure on us to stay and pretend to believe.

Join a supportive space designed for women who are navigating life after religion. This is a Europe based group but you're welcome to join from anywhere in the world!

Leaving religion can bring up questions, identity shifts, and a need for community. You do not have to go through it alone. Support groups offer connection, understanding, and a place to process your experience with others who truly get it.

This Tuesday, June 9 at 6 PM BST, Recovering from Religion is hosting a European-based Women’s Support Group.

This week on RfRx we welcome Dr. Leo Igwe, one of Africa’s most prominent voices for humanism and critical thinking. Igwe is Nigerian and works to challenge superstition, defend human rights, and promote critical thinking—not only in his country but across Africa.

Igwe founded the Humanist Association of Nigeria, and was the director of Center for Inquiry Nigeria. He shares his time directing Advocacy for Alleged Witches, the Critical Thinking Social Empowerment Foundation, and the Humanist Enabling Life Project, as well as serving on the board of Humanists International. Despite threats to his safety, Igwe works to combat pervasive superstitions that lead people to kill neighbors and even their own family members accused of witchcraft.

Join us either in Zoom (where you can ask questions), or watch the show live on YouTube. And remember to stay for the Zoom hangout after the show!

Do you know someone who feels trapped by their religious community or afraid to ask questions?

“They don’t let you leave, you can only transfer your membership to a church they approve of or be excommunicated for unrepentant sin.” Stories like this remind us why support matters. If someone in your life could use a safe, compassionate conversation, please share our Helpline with them. Our trained agents are here to listen without judgment.

Our Helpline volunteers are here to support, not to sway your beliefs.

“I’m appreciative of this helpline because the odds are volunteers here aren’t religious but you could be. Either way I don’t get the feeling you’re trying to sway me one way or another.” That kind of safe, nonjudgmental support matters. At Recovering from Religion, our trained Helpline agents are here to listen without trying to deconvert anyone.

There’s something powerful about spending time with people who truly understand your journey.

Whether you're deconstructing your faith, rebuilding your identity after religion, or simply looking for a community that "gets it," Recovering from Religion's Fall Excursion offers a welcoming space for connection, conversation, and support.

Camp Quest's youth development staff will be on site all weekend running a safe, separate camp experience for children 5–17. Our camp director, Dr. Katie Hladky-Grant, is available to answer questions and concerns at [email protected].

You don't have to navigate this journey alone.

Leaving religion can bring relief, freedom, uncertainty, grief, or all of the above at the same time. For many former believers, finding a therapist who understands that experience—and who approaches mental health care from an evidence-based, nonreligious perspective—can make a meaningful difference.

Secular therapy provides support grounded in science, psychology, and proven therapeutic methods, without incorporating religious or spiritual beliefs into treatment.

You deserve support that respects your values, your experiences, and your journey.

If you're looking for a therapist who is a good fit for you, find a secular therapist here: https://www.seculartherapy.org/
