How can you know the difference between ordinary back-to-school jitters and clinical anxiety?

It’s normal for kids to have school stress that might look like “butterflies” in their belly or having trouble sleeping the night before. They might even complain about being bored, feeling restless or having a headache or stomachache.

If your child has a long-term inability to focus, it’s likely time to seek professional help. They may have oversensitivity to loud sounds, textures or being touched. These can be signs that they might benefit from talking with a professional counselor.

Thank you to the generous team at CAPTRUST for volunteering and making a difference for the children we serve! These enthusiastic volunteers helped organize our food pantry and also hosted a fun craft activity for the children in our Day Treatment program.

A highlight was touring The Children's Place on Wheels, our mobile mental health unit which CAPTRUST generously supported to bring to our community.

As Executive Director of Kids in Christ Academy, one of the first host sites for The Children's Place on Wheels, Christina Puckett has been an enthusiastic partner for this new program and a true believer in the importance of early childhood mental health.

Did you catch the sneak peek of our new playground update yesterday?

We are excited to partner with Centric and Slattery Design + Architecture to help make this vision a reality. Last month we hosted a special day with representatives from each of these teams visiting our classrooms to give the kids a special sneak peek of their new playground. They even gave the kiddos their very own child-sized safety vests, hard hats featuring our beloved Rudy Bear, and a coloring book showcasing the new playground.

The enthusiastic teams at Centric and Slattery are carefully involving the children throughout the process, knowing that changes to the playground can affect children with an altered schedule, increased noise and more. We're so grateful for their thoughtfulness to help explain these changes to the little ones and maybe even allow them to learn a bit about construction along the way!

Some big changes are happening to our playground! Construction begins today on exciting updates to our playground, adding a new space specifically for toddlers and building shade coverings.

We have long dreamed of creating a special portion of our playground just for the youngest children we serve, giving them a safe space to learn to walk, run and play away from the activity and commotion of the older children. We will also be adding new shade structures, allowing children to enjoy outdoor play more comfortably throughout the year. Thank you to all who generously support the work we do and who have made this vision possible.

Water days are just one of the many ways we work to restore childhood for the children we serve. For little ones who have experienced traumatic events, these playful days are a way that we can help build positive childhood memories. Because every kid deserves the chance to splash around in the summer!

Going back to school can be a big transition for young children. How can you help the children in your life prepare for this change?

1. Prioritize sleep and start adjusting your bedtime schedule early to give kids time to get used to waking up for school.

2. Ensure that kids have predictable moments throughout the day before and after school to provide structure. This could be as simple as a hug before they head out the door or a special bedtime story at night.

3. Offer as much consistency as you can at home to allow time for your child to adjust to all of the changes happening while they’re at school. Starting a new school year means lots of time with new people and new rules, which can be a lot for children to get used to.
