Meet Menphis, age 18

Like many teenagers before him, Menphis came to PAL KCK to volunteer for Driver's Ed. However, only two months later, he's a staff member who counts greeting people at the door as the best part of his day. He didn't plan on any of it. The people persuaded him.

One of those people was KCKPD Officer Tommy Tomasic. "Tommy is someone who understands me and treats me like an adult." With these relationships, Menphis has learned to be a better team player and, just as importantly, to accept help when he needs it.

"Without even realizing it, I've already grown," he said.

As Menphis works to find stability and continue growing, he recognizes that PAL KCK has offered “unmatchable support and countless opportunities.”

And to any kid on the fence about joining? Menphis doesn't hesitate: "Absolutely one of the best choices I've ever made."

Meet Strawberry! 🍓🐾

Our newest garden resident wandered into the PAL KCK Community Garden as a stray who wasn't too sure about people. With a little patience (and a few treats!), she's decided this is home—and now she acts like she owns the place!

The best surprise? Strawberry recently had kittens!

Everyone keeps asking where the babies are, but this protective mama has them tucked away somewhere safe. She still makes her daily rounds for food and a little attention before heading back to her hidden nursery.

We're hoping that in a few weeks she'll proudly bring her kittens to the PAL KCK Community Garden so we can all meet the newest members of the PAL KCK family! 🌿🐱

Tickets on Sale Now for KCK PALFEST 2026

Presented by title sponsor Basys

Saturday, September 26 • 6-9 p.m.

The Shield Club at Sporting Park

This year's PALFEST celebrates mentorship, the life-changing relationships between PAL KCK youth and the KCKPD officers who serve as their coaches, mentors, and role models.

PAL KCK is about far more than programs; it's trusted adults showing up consistently to help young people build confidence, develop life skills, and see possibilities beyond their circumstances. The research is clear: young people with mentors are 55% more likely to enroll in college and far less likely to skip school or use drugs.

The evening supports free programs for 1,500+ youth in Wyandotte County and the Greater Kansas City Metro, and gathers nearly 350 civic, business, and community leaders for a casual evening featuring cocktails, silent and live auctions, a raffle, and dinner.

Some nights dinner smells like summer, burgers on the grill and kids waiting their turn. Other nights it's walking tacos, spaghetti, or once, memorably, an ice cream truck pulling up for dessert. Whatever's on the menu, one thing is constant when dinner is served at PAL KCK: nobody leaves hungry.

On dinner nights, somewhere between 100 and 125 kids sit down to eat, plus the parents and siblings who come along to enjoy the evening. Seconds are always on offer, and when there's extra food, we save it to be incorporated into another community dinner, with PAL KCK staff and KCKPD officers contributing additional dishes to make it a complete meal.

None of this happens without the people who show up ready to serve. Week after week, our friends at NorthPoint Foundation, Basys, Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que, and the Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department (among others, see the full list below) roll up their sleeves to help feed PAL KCK families. Their consistency, generosity, and willingness to serve make these dinners possible — and our kids notice.

Right now we consistently serve dinner two nights a week. Our goal: every day PAL KCK is open so that every child who comes through our doors can rely on consistent nourishment and care, physically and emotionally. Every plate shared reminds our youth that they belong, that the community believes in them, and that good truly does grow here.

Thank you to all our regular dinner heroes: Basys, BPU, Chicken N Pickle, Daughters of the American Revolution, Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que, Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department, Kansas Speedway NASCAR, Kiwanis East, Local 64 Firefighters Community Service Foundation, Marvin Windows and Doors, NorthPoint Development, and PAL KCK Board of Directors.

Sometimes the smallest moments inspire the biggest ideas.

Recently, we took a few PAL KCK youth to dinner to celebrate their hard work. As the meal began, we noticed them quietly watching the adults at the table before placing their cloth napkins in their laps. It wasn't awkward—it was thoughtful. They were learning by observing.

It made us realize something. Many of the restaurants in our community are casual places where cloth napkins and formal place settings simply aren't part of the experience. If you've never encountered those things before, how would you know what to do?

That moment inspired us to add Social & Professional Etiquette to our Workforce Readiness Program. Beginning in August, and in partnership with Courtney Fadler Etiquette, our youth will build confidence in introductions, conversation, dining etiquette, and first impressions—skills that help them feel comfortable in interviews, business meetings, networking events, and new experiences.

At PAL KCK, we believe confidence grows through opportunity, and every young person deserves the chance to walk into any room knowing they belong.
