At PALFEST, we presented the Community Partner Award to Paul Holewinski in recognition of his extraordinary commitment since the organization's earliest days.
As a founding board member and Treasurer on the Executive Committee, Paul has provided invaluable leadership and financial expertise through some of the organization's most important periods of growth, from grant development and program expansion to securing the PAL KCK facility. He also serves on the building and grounds committee, rolling up his sleeves to help in ways that go far beyond writing a check.
"I could see the potential of the building, but more importantly, I could see the impact that [Executive Director Matt Tomasic]'s vision could have on young people and families throughout Kansas City, Kansas," Paul said, recalling his first visit to the old Strawberry Hill church that would become PAL KCK. "I knew immediately that I wanted to be involved and help make that vision a reality."
That instinct to help has defined his time on the board ever since. Paul has contributed his time, expertise, and financial support, and he continues to raise awareness and build connections for PAL KCK throughout the community.
One memory from PAL KCK's early days has stayed with Paul. After a board meeting soon after the organization was formed, he struck up a conversation with a young woman helping check in kids for the evening. When he asked about her future plans, she told him she wanted his job one day, to serve on the PAL KCK board, so kids could see someone who looked like them and know they could be leaders too.
"That moment has always stayed with me," Paul said. "It reminded me that PAL KCK's impact goes far beyond providing activities for young people. PAL KCK helps them see what is possible for their own futures."
