Neighborhood work often feels like one step forward, two steps back. Thanks to the Troost Avenue District, we're moving forward again!
In January, Sean Ackerson, Southtown Kansas City, let us know that the bus shelter at 49th Street and Troost had been hit by a motorist. It was built in 1997 on a parcel of land now owned by the Troostwood Neighborhood Association (TNA).
Previously, the shelter was hit in November 2024, and it took a while to secure funding and find the right person who'd work with the budget of a small nonprofit. It was repaired in October 2025 (with funding from a Neighborhood Empowerment grant from the City of KCMO).
But now we had to start all over again.
Ackerson suggested we apply for funding from the Troost Avenue CID. We reached out for some new bids, submitted a request, and funding was approved in March. But we also wanted to create a buffer so that when we made the repairs, a motorist wouldn't hit it again.
We chatted with city officials who connected us with folks in City Planning & Development and Public Works, and met with an engineer who advised us to use rocks rather than bollards and suggested where to place them.
Also, in March, Spire had been working along Paseo and unearthed very large rocks. They agreed to leave them temporarily if we could find someone to move them.
Our contractor had someone lined up, but they didn't make it, so he rented a bobcat and moved several rocks in April (again, with help from KCMO's NEG, with a previously existing line item for rocks).
And, on Tuesday, May 19, work was completed.
We're grateful for the support - and hopeful we won't have to make these repairs again anytime soon.
