A few years ago, as I was touring numerous schools all over the state, I was flipping through 3 different children’s books to try to convey my message. I would walk out of schools and think, “did any of that make sense? Am I making a difference?”
As I was starting my Master’s program, I couldn’t shake the thought of me writing my own book- with no experience. Zero. Completely unqualified besides my own experiences.
I sat down and just started to write… less than 3 hours later, the first draft of was created. I sent it to other childhood cancer non-profits, childhood cancer families, English teachers, my professors, and anyone else with a background in children’s literature to get as much feedback as I could. I wanted to ensure the story was accurate, easy to understand, and well written.
After months of back and forth, all I needed was an illustrator, a publisher, and funding to make both of those things happen. I interviewed several local artists until I found the best fit. I spoke with different publishing companies to see whose values aligned with mine and the organization the best. Once the illustrator and publisher were chosen, it was time to share my story in hopes of finding a person to donate the funds.
After a day of sharing my story, a local bank instantly picked up the idea and wrote a check that same evening.
All proceeds from Unlocking Your Superpower go towards the efforts of - funding lifesaving research for childhood cancer. 🎗️❤️
Moral of the story: take that risk, do the unimaginable, share your story… you never know what might happen!
