Piano Technicians Guild The Official page for the PTG. With approximately 3500 members, the Guild certifies and trains Piano Technicians all over the world.

The Piano Technicians Guild (PTG), based in Kansas City, Kansas, is the official organization of the Registered Piano Technician (RPT). The PTG was formed in 1957 when the American Society of Piano Technicians and the National Association of Piano Tuners merged to form a single organization.

Exams are a big part of every Annual Convention. By the end of this year’s, we had EIGHT new RPTs! 🎉 And many more who are one step closer in their journey. A huge congratulations to the examinees for all of their hard work and perseverance. And many thanks to all of the examiners for their time and dedication. Who’s next?? 🫵

What is an RPT? The field of piano technology is an unregulated trade. Therefore, the PTG has set its own standards of quality for technicians. A Registered Piano Technician has passed three rigorous, timed examinations on the maintenance, repair, and tuning of pianos—a written, tuning, and technical exam. Many technicians train for years and have to re-take some of the exams before they earn the distinction of RPT.

Wrapping up 25 years of service, Kathy Maxwell officially retired from the staff of the PTG Home Office on August 7. “My deepest appreciation for all of the good wishes and notes I received for my retirement from PTG,” says Kathy.

“It’s been a wonderful 25 years. What a privilege it has been to work with so many of you and I will always cherish my time at the Piano Technicians Guild.” 👏 Please join us in thanking and congratulating Kathy!
