The VFW Auxiliary is one of the nation’s oldest veterans’ service organizations and our members the relatives of those who have served overseas in a location of foreign conflict. We have nearly 500,000 members representing all 50 states and abroad who volunteer millions of hours and give millions of dollars to support veterans, military service personnel, and their families. We are a voice for veterans on Capitol Hill and are instrumental in assisting the VFW pass or block legislation that impacts veterans and their families. Every year, members fund-raise millions of dollars for charitable projects that benefit veterans and their families. We also provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships for our nation’s youth. With thousands of Auxiliaries, there is likely one in your area working to improve the lives of America’s uncommon heroes.

What is the VFW Auxiliary’s 3-Dimensional Patriotic Art Contest?
Beginning in 2023 to recognize up-and-coming artists and encourage patriotism in youth, the 3-Dimensional Patriotic Art Contest is a wonderful way to recognize and honor hardworking high school students whose art is often excluded from more traditional art scholarship competitions. Previous 3-Dimensional entries have been made of clay, wood, metal, papier-mâché, glass and more, including mixed media. A brief written statement about the piece is also required.

Who is Eligible to Apply?
Students in grades 9-12 by the March 31 deadline who are enrolled in a public, private or parochial high school or home study program in the United States, its territories and possessions; or dependents of U.S. military or civilian personnel in overseas schools. Although U.S. citizenship is not required, students must be permanent residents or have applied for permanent residence status (the application for which has not been denied) to become a U.S. citizen. Foreign exchange students, students age 20 or older, GED and adult education students are ineligible.

What is the Scholarship Amount?
The first-place winner from each state competes for national awards totaling $5,500.

Two of the VFW Auxiliary's most longstanding National Programs are Americanism and Youth Activities, and through the years, both Programs have included Flag education in schools.

Americanism, formerly Americanization, was started in 1932 as the third-ever Continuing Program. Teaching Americans and future Americans about the U.S. Flag, Pledge of Allegiance, National Anthem and other patriotic symbols and history tied closely into this Program, though this education was not concentrated solely at a youth level; Auxiliary members also worked closely with those working toward becoming U.S. citizens to help them along their journey.

Youth Activities was the fifth Continuing Program. It was started in 1935, but at the time, it was The Daughters of the VFW. A few years later, it would be renamed Youth Activities and include the Junior Girls; eventually, Junior Girls would become its own separate Program. Most of the early undertakings of the Youth Activities Program involved working with organized youth groups like the Scouts, 4-H clubs and the Camp Fire Girls.

The names and Programs may have changed through the decades, but the primary goals remain the same: to educate youth about our country and those who served it and to inspire the next generation of community service volunteers.

Pictured: in late September, a West Virginia elementary school posted a thank you to VFW Auxiliary 3663 for "a wonderful visit from the VFW Auxiliary." They shared, "All the classes learned about Flag etiquette (and) the 'Buddy' Poppy and got to talk and learn about the Navy from a veteran. Thanks so much to our local VFW Auxiliary for spending time to teach these important lessons to our students. How important it is to show respect for our veterans, their service and the Flag. Our students were very well behaved and enjoyed the presentation. They also gave each child a small treat bag (and) presented our school with the book 'Sing the 50 United States' by Dr Seuss."

This week's Sunday Fun Day featured Auxiliary looks like they're ready to have fun all month long.

"Don't forget to get your picture taken in the foyer of the Canteen!" Post and Auxiliary 1377 in Illinois posted to Facebook recently, tagging the Department, and "the fun girls" - members Mary Johnston, Jo Donaldson Sussenbach, Chrisy Campbell, Deb Marti, Cheryl Buchanan and Bev Huber Darbyshire - decided to do just that.

We hope many members will follow in your footsteps, taking fun photos with this festive backdrop ahead of Halloween, and we wonder if there will be any other treats... or tricks... up your sleeves this month.

The VFW Auxiliary is pleased to share with you the details of the Continuing Education Scholarship! This is an opportunity to assist members and their immediate family members who wish to further their education by pursing a college degree or career direction at a vocational/technical school.

Who is Eligible to Apply?
• Applicant must be 21 years of age or older.
• Applicant must be an Auxiliary member (for at least 1 year) OR the child or spouse of an Auxiliary member.

What is the Scholarship Amount?
• Four $2,250 scholarships are awarded each year, one in each of the four VFW Auxiliary Conferences.

What are the Scholarship Submission Requirements?
Each applicant must:
• Answer all questions on the Continuing Education Scholarship application
• Write a brief essay (no more than 300 words) describing their commitment to their goals and how this scholarship will help them attain these goals.

What is the Application Deadline?
• February 15, 2027

DONNA'S DESTINATIONS:
SERVING AMERICA'S HEROES

VFW Auxiliary National President Donna K. Mills is on the road and in the air! She's making her Official Visits to each Department and you can follow along on her journey using the hashtag (or use it when sharing your own pictures from her trip to your state).

Mills' 16th Official visit involved searching for bison at Big Bone Lick State Historic Site, seeing St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, checking out the Fort Thomas Military & Community Museum and getting a tour around Covington with the help of James Toebbe, Covington Commissioner, who shared to Facebook, "This was Donna’s first visit to Covington, so of course we had to start with the view from Devou Park! While we were there, I had the honor of presenting her with a proclamation recognizing her first visit to our city." She enjoyed her time with Toebbe, Auxiliary Department of Kentucky President Ronald Kohrs, National Chaplain Janey Feher and many members.

Today is World Mental Health Day.

According to the World Health Organization, this year's theme is "Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change." The day is set aside to "meaningfully engage with people with lived experience of mental health conditions and to recognize their knowledge as a vital form of expertise."

One mental health challenge commonly experienced by veterans is post-traumatic stress. About 7% of all U.S. veterans have experienced or will experience PTS(D) in their lifetime, with rates as high as 29% for veterans of the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and Desert Storm, though it is worth noting that the mental health conditions that impacted those who served longer ago were often given other labels at the time, including Shell Shock, Battle Fatigue and Post-Vietnam Syndrome.

If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health issues, help is available. The Veterans Crisis Line is 988; press 1. For non-veterans, the number is 988, but listen for your options.

Even one death by su***de is too many.

VFW Auxiliary members have been working with youth since the precursor to the Youth Activities Program began in 1935. About a decade later, the current name was chosen and Auxiliary members across the nation were quick to get involved by working closely with, educating and supporting VFW Junior Girl units, Girl Scouts, 4-H clubs, Camp Fire Girls, sports teams, church youth groups and more.

Today's VFW Auxiliary in Action is Auxiliary 4252 in Florida. They recently presented Good Citizenship Awards to nine incredible students from a local elementary school where Assistant Principal Amanda Haynes and Librarian Ms.Story were recipients of the same award in 1982 and 1994. ("How amazing is that?" asks the Auxiliary.)

Auxiliary members present were President Bill Pepito, Senior Vice-President Judy Prive, Treasurer Carol Franker, Life Member Sharon Pepito and little Miller, their adorable canine mascot.

Each child received their citation along with a VFW "Buddy" Poppy, a special pencil and a ruler with the Pledge of Allegiance printed on it.

Well done, students, and thank you, Auxiliary 4252, for recognizing them and being one of our Auxiliaries in Action!
