Dear Friends and Supporters,

We are delighted to share that the newest edition of The Beacon: True Light Shining is now live.

In this volume, we turn our hearts and attention to the remarkable journey of Jevae Collins. Jevae’s story takes us through the profound challenges of housing displacement—including a brutal winter where she weathered the cold with her nine-year-old son—and into the doors of Emancipation Station at True Light Family Resource Center when she had nowhere else to turn.

It is a deeply moving account of what happens when life tests our resilience, but even more so, it is a testament to the grit, unwavering faith, and supportive sisterhood that empowers mothers to stand back up, earn their licenses across three lines of insurance, and build a brand-new horizon for their families.

Building Stronger Roots: Creating Real Paths to Homeownership in Kansas City

Finding safe, high-quality, and affordable housing across Kansas City shouldn’t feel out of reach—especially for the dedicated workers who keep our community moving forward every single day.

This past Sunday, Emily Robinson, Director of Housing Development at Driven Development, visited True Light Family Resource Center’s Emancipation Station to share an inspiring housing initiative designed for local workers and families. Driven Development is a Kansas City nonprofit created to serve the "missing middle"—those who earn too much to qualify for traditional housing vouchers, yet find today’s standard rental market increasingly unaffordable.

Key Program Highlights & Opportunities:
Serving Helping Professions & Retirees: Priority eligibility is offered to individuals working in healthcare, education, first response, government agencies, and nonprofit sectors, as well as retirees from these fields.

Attainable Rental Options: Available properties include apartment communities such as Dutch Hill and Plaza 36, as well as brand-new Midtown single-family rental homes starting at $1,500/month (3-bed/2-bath) and $1,600/month (4-bed/3-bath). (Tenants are responsible for utilities).

A Structured Path to Homeownership: In their rent-to-own single-family home initiative, a portion of monthly rent is directed toward the resident's security deposit savings. Renters receive free, personalized budgeting and credit guidance through Pathway Financial, step-by-step mortgage support, and a 5% discount below appraised market value at the time of purchase.

Accessible Qualification Guidelines: Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis based on availability. Openings require a gross monthly income of 3x rent, with background evaluations conducted on a case-by-case basis and no minimum credit score cutoff.

True Light Family Resource Center was blessed to deliver children's clothes to Parker Square Apartments (located at 1051 Basie Place) for their special back-to-school event supporting low-income Latino families on August 13th!

Neighbors Supporting Neighbors: A Look Back at Operation Backpack

Over the weekend, Swope Park turned into an incredible hub of hope, unity, and hands-on action for the annual Operation Backpack event, spearheaded by Mayor Pro Tem and 5th District Councilwoman Ryana Parks-Shaw.

With cars lining both sides of the street as far as the eye could see, the turnout was a powerful testament to how Kansas City comes together to support our neighbors. Pounds of essential food and supplies, hundreds of backpacks, and a diverse network of organizations came out to provide critical services and resources directly to families preparing for the school year.

A Testament to Citywide Collaboration
What makes an initiative like this so remarkable is the true community synergy on display. It is so much more than just a giveaway—it is a physical manifestation of a city locking arms to lift up its residents:

Meeting Tangible Needs: From backpacks and school supplies to books and family resources, the event tackled head-on the financial pressures families face during back-to-school season.

Comprehensive Care: Multiple local organizations and services set up booths to offer health resources, direct support, and community guidance.

🥞 A Morning of Fellowship, Service, and 300+ Plates Served! 🍳
This past Saturday morning, our community came together in a powerful way at True Light Family Resource Center. Alongside our incredible partners, we had the absolute pleasure of serving over 300 hot, scratch-made breakfast plates—complete with fluffy pancakes, eggs, and savory sausage—to our neighbors currently experiencing homelessness.

True partnership makes all of this possible:
Metropolitan Lutheran Ministries (MLM) provides vital food supplies, logistical support, and equipment.

True Light Family Resource Center opens its doors, providing the welcoming meeting space and commercial kitchen where those scratch-made pancakes come to life.

Northland Cathedral—we want to offer a special, heartfelt thank you for your dedicated service, hands-on help, and unwavering commitment to fellowship with our community.

Through thoughtful planning and generous hands, not only did we serve over 300 plates, but we even had extra to share with latecomers, ensuring no one left hungry.

When: Every Saturday morning from 7:30 AM to 9:00 AM

Can you hear the angels singing? If not right now, God-willing, you soon will!

We are so blessed to welcome Ramona Blair all the way from Oregon to the True Light Family Resource Center family. Mona has been sharing her incredible musical and creative gifts with us, teaching women and children from Emancipation Station how to rock out on the electric guitar. (Ever heard of the famous "Hendrix Chord"? They're learning it firsthand!)

For two Saturdays in a row, the church sanctuary right across the street has been filled with music from 1:00 to 4:00 PM. Mona's vision goes even further—she's dreaming of bringing everyone together to form a special women and children's choir. It's an ambitious goal, but she has already generously procured five electric guitars and amps to make it happen... and rumor has it she plans to bring pizza and cake for the next session!

Want to get involved?
These classes take place on Saturdays (though we are open to adding another day of practice!), and they are primarily geared toward youth who want to learn how to play the electric guitar, sing, or try their hand at percussion. Interested parties can simply send us a direct message to sign up!

Beyond the music, Mona's heart for service shines bright. You can find her volunteering every Monday right here at the Resource Center, helping sort clothes and support our neighbors.
