Day of the Dogs

Day of the Dogs Day of the Dogs is a volunteer-driven 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to helping shelter dogs. We believe when people know of a need they will help.

Shelter dogs need exposure or else they become invisible. LET THEM BE SEEN!

750 days ago, Miss Bea was surrendered to the shelter by the family she had known and loved for six years.

Today, she still waits, hoping they come back.

Miss Bea is now a senior, and time is no longer on her side. This is not where she should be spending her golden years. Yet every morning she wakes up with hope that today might finally be the day someone chooses her.

Unfortunately, that day never comes.

In the last 750 days, Miss Bea has lost her home, her family, and everything familiar to her. What she hasn't lost is her gentle spirit.

She loves people.

She loves other dogs.

She leans in for affection, takes treats gently, and happily accepts every kiss and belly rub offered to her.

She has every reason to be angry.

Every reason to stop trusting.

Every reason to give up.

Instead, she continues to love.

Miss Bea sits in a rural shelter where very few people know she exists, yet she continues to hold onto hope that her person is out there somewhere.

These should not be her golden years.

Miss Bea was surrendered because she does not do well with cats or chickens. She is wonderful with other dogs and would love a fenced yard and a canine companion to spend her days with.

Please don't let Miss Bea spend another year waiting.

She has already lost enough.

The The Flying Hair • Specialty Grooming in Waldo offered to groom Gizmo, the long stay dog at the Chillicothe Animal Shelter that we were networking weeks ago and was adopted on June 7th after over 7 years in the shelter.

Adrian, the owner, said "He was so densely packed with undercoat that he had some dandruff from lack or air to the skin. He was a little itchy but nothing looked bad. It may take him a little bit to get over the itch but air can reach the skin now and that will help.... He lost about an inch of hair! "

That's another aspect of these long stay dogs. They don't get regular baths and maintenance which can cause skin issues.. Besides the weight gain from lack of exercise.

Let's keep working together to find outcomes for the others that have been there for a year or longer.
Still more need our collective help!

🚨 FREEDOM RIDE CELEBRATION! 🐾

Yesterday was a monumental day for two very special pups! We are thrilled to share that Bailey and Buttercup have officially left the Chillicothe Animal Shelter! 🎉

These two sweet souls have been waiting a long, long time... over a year and three months. They even went through the prison training program, working so hard, only to come back and sit in a kennel again. But yesterday, their luck finally changed. They got their official freedom ride up to our amazing rescue partner, P.A.W.S. Tinley Park in Illinois! ❤️

An incredible milestone like this doesn't just happen; it takes a village. This lifesaving trip was only possible because two incredible women stepped up and volunteered their time to drive:

Irene took first leg, driving Bailey and Buttercup all the way from Chillicothe to Jacksonville, Illinois! 🚗
Shari met them there and drove the final leg from Jacksonville to Tinley Park, Illinois! ✨

Because of Irene and Shari, two long-stay dogs are finally out of the shelter environment and on their way to the forever homes they so richly deserve.

Check out this video we put together of their big departure and their journey to freedom! 📹👇 Let’s celebrate these two amazing girls and the incredible volunteers who made it happen. Two more are OUT! 🥳🐕🐕

🚨 THE COUCH HAS BEEN FOUND: PENNY IS OUT! 🚨

Yesterday, a piece of our hearts finally walked out of the shelter doors. Penny is officially safe, loved, and starting her brand-new life. 😭❤️

Penny’s story is a heavy one. In June of 2023, she was brought into the shelter as just a tiny puppy, alongside her mom and littermates, rescued from a neglect situation. One by one, her family members were adopted. But Penny waited.

As of this month, she hit a heartbreaking milestone: three years inside the shelter. For three full years, the only world Penny knew was contained within four kennel walls. She was the very last dog from that original rescue still waiting.

But yesterday, everything changed. 🌟

This incredible happy ending was made possible by Maria, who stepped up without hesitation to drive Penny all the way to St. Louis to meet her brand-new family! 🚗💨

When Penny finally arrived, her new dad was incredibly emotional meeting her. They already love her so much!!
Because the shelter is the only world she remembers, Penny is very scared right now and has a lot of figuring out to do. There is a big, beautiful world of exploration ahead of her, but she gets to navigate it at her own pace, surrounded by patience and unconditional love. 🏡✨

Thank you, Maria, for driving her to freedom, and thank you to her amazing new family for opening your hearts to a long-stay shelter pup. Penny, your kennel days are over. You are home. 💕

We named this boy Simon

He came in with 3 other adults and 14 puppies
He is struggling at the shelter because he refuses to be kenneled.
So this is where he is now :( a pop up crate. All day. Ugh

He is super affectionate and does well with other dogs

Please share to help him be seen

6/18/26 they are out of the shelter and made it to rescue in IL :)

6/16/26 UPDATE: thank you to all who contributed! We have the $100 raised for each of their pull fees plus $89 for gas which will be split and given to each woman that is driving one leg of their freedom ride :)
____________________________________________________________________

Solution almost complete for these two!

One of our rescue partners P.A.W.S. Tinley Park tagged these two dogs :)
Irene and Shari have volunteered to drive their "Road Trip for Good" to get them from the shelter to the rescue
Irene will pick them up from Chillicothe and meet Shari in Jacksonville, IL. Shari will drive them the rest of the way to Tinley Park, IL
They plan to leave Thursday

We still need to raise the $100 pull fee for each dog and if anyone would like to donate some gas money to each lady that would be kind.

The shelter only accepts cash or check.
Our group can collect and give the money to them:
Venmo: -theDogs
Cash App: $4DayoftheDogs
PayPal: [email protected]
Here through Facebook
Or if you are in the Kansas City I can meet you in Overland Park/Leawood (near my office) or north of the river (where I live)

LONG STAY DOGS at the Chillicothe Animal Shelter
The dogs pictured here are some of the long-stay residents we are still fighting for. Some have been waiting months. Some have been waiting years.

Penny has spent THREE YEARS in the shelter.

Rocky has spent nearly three years in the shelter.

Several of the huskies were brought in as puppies in November 2023 after a breeder surrendered them instead of euthanizing them when they couldn't be sold.

Every one of these dogs deserves a chance.

How You Can Help
🏡 ADOPT

The ultimate goal is for these dogs to find their people.

If one of these dogs speaks to you, reach out. We can help connect you with the shelter and answer questions.

📸 VOLUNTEER WITH US

We're planning future trips to Chillicothe.

Come spend a day with the dogs.

Help us:

-Walk dogs
--Take photos
-Shoot videos
-Give the dogs a break from their kennels
-Help us tell their stories

No experience required. Just a willingness to help.

📲 SHARE THEIR STORIES

Sometimes one share changes everything.

That's exactly what happened with Gizmo.

Share posts. Tag friends. Post in breed groups. Put these dogs in front of new audiences.

🎬 HELP CREATE CONTENT

Are you good with:

-TikTok
-Instagram Reels
-Facebook Reels
-Video editing
-Graphic design

We have photos and videos we can send you and would love your help getting these dogs seen by more people.

🐾 NETWORK WITH RESCUES

Do you have connections with:

Rescue groups
Shelters
Breed-specific rescues
Foster organizations

We are especially looking for partners in Missouri and neighboring states willing to help one dog at a time.
We have a transport option to Colorado, Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana. So if you can reach out to groups in those states (we could probably figure out transport to Iowa, Nebraska and Minnesota too) we could figure out transports and $$ if we have a place for any to go

🚗 TRANSPORT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

One of the biggest challenges in rescue is transportation.

Tracker recently made his "Road Trip for Good" thanks to volunteers willing to drive a leg of his journey.

If you're willing to:

Drive a dog to a foster
Meet another transporter halfway
Help with a rescue transfer
Or drive the dog all the way to it's destination

We would love to add you to our transport team.

💰 SPONSOR A DOG

We will need help covering:

Shelter pull fee of $100 for each dog (still need help with the last two pulled: Tracker and Pugsley)
Gas

Financial sponsors can literally help open the next kennel.

The lesson we've learned from Gizmo is simple:

***People will help when they know there is a need***

So we're going to keep introducing these dogs one by one.

Because they can't advocate for themselves.

Chillicothe Shelter Status Update for far:
16 Dogs Out of the Shelter Since April 29 ❤️

On April 29, I stopped at the Chillicothe Animal Shelter while driving from Kansas City to Indiana. I was looking to build relationships with shelters and rescues that might be willing to help southern shelter pets.

What I found instead was a shelter full of dogs that had been waiting.

Some had been there for a year.

Some had been there for two - thee years.

And one senior dog named Gizmo had been there for over seven years.

Shelter Guardian Lesley gave me a tour of the shelter and allowed me to film the dogs. I promised her I would share their story everywhere I went.

Since that day, an incredible group of people has stepped up to help.

What Happened Next

📍 May 10 – I returned on Mother's Day with my 7-year-old son and filmed more dogs.

📍 May 23 – Nicole Hestand Rhoney from New Beginnings Rescue joined me, along with Tracey, Missouri Representative for Best Friends Animal Society. We spent the day getting dogs out of their kennels and filming temperament videos so rescues and adopters could see who these dogs really were.

That was the day we discovered Gizmo's intake date: May 1, 2019.

A dog who had spent more than seven years waiting.

After sharing his story, someone tagged Scott Poore.

📍 Early June – Maria Torres from Helping Forgotten Paws saw Gizmo's story and reached out wanting to help. She drove from Leavenworth to Chillicothe, filmed several long-stay dogs, and created an emotional video about Gizmo that she shared across her social media platforms.

The response was immediate. :) :)

Calls started coming in from across the country.

One of those calls came from the family who would ultimately adopt Gizmo.

📍 June 7 – I met Gizmo's adopters at the shelter and had the privilege of documenting one of the happiest moments I've ever witnessed: a dog walking out of a shelter after over seven years and heading home with his family. I sent the photos and videos to Maria and she did a phenomenal freedom ride video and picked the perfect song for him. I can't stop watching it!

📍 June 13 – The team grew even larger. Nicole returned, along with Melissa Peck, whose photography skills are helping showcase these dogs at their best, and Jessica Amber, whose dog training background helps us better evaluate and advocate for the dogs. Ryan came with Jessica and joined the effort as well, giving us extra hands to work with more dogs.

That same day, another long-stay dog got his chance.

Tracker, a German Shorthaired Pointer who had spent nine months at the shelter, began what we called his "Road Trip for Good." Melissa not only donated her time photographing dogs that day, but also drove one leg of Tracker's transport journey in the pouring rain. She met up with Rachelle Worrall, who completed the second leg and delivered Tracker safely to his foster home. Melinda Hartel generously stepped up and offered to cover the gas expenses to help make the transport possible.

It's a perfect example of how rescue works. One person takes pictures. Another shares a post. Someone volunteers to drive. Someone else helps cover expenses. Piece by piece, a community comes together to change a dog's future.

The Results So Far:

✅ 16 dogs out of the shelter
✅ 3 adopted
✅ 7 placed into foster homes
✅ 6 transferred to other shelters and rescues in MO

Most importantly:

Gizmo, Trisha and Brooke are HOME.

Thank You!!!

This effort would not have happened without the people who stepped up:

❤️ Lesley and the staff at Chillicothe Animal Shelter for caring for these dogs and opening the doors for us to help.
❤️ Nicole with New Beginnings Rescue for making multiple trips and being willing to jump in wherever needed.
❤️ Tracey, Missouri Representative for Best Friends Animal Society, for helping bring additional resources and attention to the shelter's needs.
❤️ Scott Poore for using his platform to shine a spotlight on Gizmo and the shelter.
❤️ Maria Torres for her incredible video editing and social media storytelling that helped Gizmo's story reach thousands of people.
❤️ Melissa Peck for donating her photography talent to help these dogs be seen.
❤️ Jessica Potts for sharing her training knowledge and helping us better showcase the dogs.
❤️ Ryan for lending an extra set of hands during our shelter visits.

And thank you to everyone who has shared a post, tagged a rescue, made a phone call, donated, fostered, adopted, or simply cared.

This is proof of something I've believed for a long time:

***People want to help. They just have to know the need.***

The work isn't finished. There are still long-stay dogs waiting at Chillicothe.

But 16 dogs are no longer waiting.

And that's a pretty good start.

There are more to go! If anyone else wants to help you are welcome!! Please reach out
