‘When we all share what we have, we can all have what we need’ is the sentiment we live by and what we’re committed to growing in the world starting with our neighborhood. Our ‘Let’s Grow Wyandotte!’ program does just that!

Since 2020, we’ve helped over 1200 backyard growers get started, learn new skills, meet their neighbors, and grow food… a lot of food. This year, the members are more active than ever and our staff is keeping busy pulling together workshops, a new guidebook, and providing more opportunities to support our community.

Take a look at the gardens from across the county and begin to believe…we can create tomorrow better than today. Action is… most definitely… the solution! These garden photos are from members’ backyards, front yards, side yards, and patios- any where the sun hits can be a place to grow food.

We are grateful to the community, the folx who by supporting us allow us to support our members, and of course, to the Let’s Grow Wyandotte members who do the hard work of caring for the soil and the plants, and who snap these beautiful photos that prove…hope.

Our first farm agreement is simple: say hello to everyone you meet.

But building a farm at the center of its community—one that inspires people of all ages, ancestries, and abilities—takes more. It takes humility and listening to people who truly know what inclusion does (and doesn't) feel like.

For our teacher co-founder and now co-executive director, Jennifer, this commitment goes back more than 30 years, when she first began working alongside adults and youth with different abilities. When KC Farm School was founded, inclusion was built in from the beginning. In fact, the first recurring group to visit the farm was a class of students receiving special education services, and they have been coming biweekly since 2019—a true reflection of our mission.

Everyone belongs here and has meaningful ways to engage on this land.

Recently, thanks to the Gould Foundation, we were able to increase on-farm accessibility and invite our team into deeper learning around inclusion. In partnership with Easter Seals Midwest and The Whole Person, we hosted an on-farm inclusion training last Friday. They showed up and immediately set the tone with five simple words: “Nothing About Us Without Us.”

Individuals with lived experience led the training and were generous with their truth, giving our staff the opportunity to move through this land with different lenses. We explored teaching with plain language, navigating mobility, vision, and hearing challenges, and what dignity and autonomy look like in practice.

Our team called it one of the most moving and meaningful training experiences they've ever had. This is the kind of learning that changes how people show up every day.

We are not doing this work for our community. We must do it with them, and there is more work to do both here and across our communities. We can't stop until everyone is heard, valued, and truly included.

If your organization is ready, we highly recommend reaching out to and to schedule a team training. It can help create an important shift in your team and culture long after the day is done.

Come tomorrow for the FRESHEST veggies at our farm stop this week, BUT STAY, for the return of our Summer Jumble Swap! It's a great reason to clean out your closets, shed, or attic to see what may need a new home, while finding something that needs your home!

When?
The Jumble Swap will be held at our Farm Stop on Wed. June 10th from 3-6 pm, the Farm Stop will be open until 7pm.

Where?
Common Ground: 2443 S. 42nd St. KCKS, 66106

What?
A Jumble Swap is an opportunity to share what you don't need anymore with your neighbors, take what you may need, and to keep items useful, without exchanging money. It's free!

How?
You can drop off items today, June 9 from 3-5 pm at Common Ground, or bring items with you tomorrow, June 10. You'll see a designated Jumble Swap drop booth hosted by Eva and Charlotte. You do not have to bring items to take items. We ask that you only bring what you can carry and avoid large, bulky items like furniture or electronics. Please only bring items that are clean enough and useful to others. We also ask that you do not bring food items. At the conclusion of the swap, we will donate all remaining items to Healing House.

Of course, our CSA Farm Share members can pick up their share with us on Wednesday, Thursday or Saturday, and as always, we proudly accept Pay-What-You're-Able for our veggies as well as SNAP and Double Up Food Bucks.

The Farmers on the Rise apprentices went on the road yesterday traveling to KCMO to visit, learn from, and volunteer with MO HIVES, our friends who build urban apiaries, provide youth education and jobs, teach the community about the health benefits of honey and good nutrition, and the importance of supporting pollinators in the city.

We enjoyed seeing all the good growing at their apiary and we appreciated their team sharing about honeybee care. Then we got busy sprucing up their edible garden trail and planting some garden beds, and even had time for some fun and games.

This partnership dates back to our early days- the two organizations were founded at about the same time and over the years have shared support and encouragement with each other as we stretched to grow and bring more opportunities to more kids around the Kansas City area.

Many thanks for their warm welcome and generous hospitality. We're looking forward to hosting the MO Hives team at our place in a couple weeks!

Our Let's Grow Wyandotte program- seeds, plants, support, and workshops for backyard growers- now in its sixth year has helped over 1,200 neighbors in Wyandotte County (and beyond) start and care for their own gardens. This year, we're hosting more workshops for members with topics requested by members.

Our workshop on Saturday was enthusiastically received by many who are considering raising rabbits for meat. In an excellent presentation by Becky Steinhauser of New Beginning Farm, attendees learned how to choose rabbit breads, about their care, cages v colony, how to harvest and preserve their meat. We're grateful to Becky for sharing her 40 years experience and her time with us.

Farm friend, Jacob Chapman of Moose Paw Farm presented our rainwater catchment systems- using gutters on a high tunnel with IBC tote collection and a rain barrel attached to home gutters. Jacob co-led a SARE grant that installed these systems so he was also able to discuss the solar pump we use to move the water from the totes, through filters, and to our tunnel irrigation system.

Finally, we toured Gibbs Road Farm and the community garden at Common Ground and received a tomato trellising lesson from 5-year crew member, Gabe Diaz. We use the Florida Basket Weave system, but Gabe shared there are many ways to trellis tomatoes!
