Missouri Korean War Veterans Memorial

Missouri Korean War Veterans Memorial Our mission is to perpetuate the legacy of Korean War Veterans, present and past, and of the more than 900 Missourians who paid the supreme sacrifice.

In June of 1950, the United States rushed to the aid of the Republic of South Korea after they came under the attack of communist North Korea. Many thousands of American men and women were called to active duty to assist the effort — barely five years after the conclusion of World War II. Although in the beginning it was called a “police action,” the war would eventually call over 1,500,000 Americ

ans to serve during the course of the conflict. Before an armistice was signed in July 1953, the lives of nearly 37,000 America soldiers, 3,100 United Nations soldiers and 47,000 Republic of South Korea soldiers were lost. An additional 103,000 Americans were wounded and many still receive medical care in VA Medical Centers across the country. Over 8,000 are still listed as missing in action. Of those who gave their lives to uphold our nation’s freedom and convictions, over 900 were from the state of Missouri, and over 100 were from the Kansas City area.

The Battle of Chosin Reservoir, or “Changjin” as it’s called in Korea, was a two-week-long bloodbath fought between 27 November and 13 December 1950, where United Nations (UN) forces, primarily U.S. Marines, faced a surprise attack from a much larger Chinese army in harsh winter conditions.

The UN forces consisted of a single U.S. Division, consisting of 30,000 U.S., Republic of Korea and British troops facing 3 Chinese Divisions numbering well over 120,000 Chinese soldiers. Despite being outnumbered and surrounded, UN troops under the field command of Major General Oliver P. Smith (U.S. Marines) conducted a brutal fighting retreat to the port of Hungnam while engaged with the enemy for 17-days in temperatures as low as -35 degrees.

These UN forces suffered heavy casualties but demonstrated remarkable resilience in the face of tremendous adversity. The Service members who fought during this defining moment of the Korean War are nicknamed “The Chosin Few.”

Frozen Chosin Challenge
=================

The Frozen Chosin Challenge honors those U.S. Marines, Army, Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard Service members who fought during the Korean War between 1950 and 1953. Fourteen nations committed service members to the United Nations Command including the Republic of Korea, whose troops fought to preserve their homeland. From the Pusan Perimeter, Inchon, and Seoul to Sudong-ni, Koto-ri and the mountain battlefields of the Chosin Reservoir; Hagaru-ri and Yudam-ni, we remember the sacrifices of all those who answered the call to fight for South Korea’s freedom and democracy. Some gave all, all gave some. In their memory the Missouri Korean War Veterans Memorial is sponsoring this event to bring awareness to their sacrifices and honor.

This event will support awareness and education of the Korean War, specifically the Battle of Chosin Reservoir; along with direct funding for the Missouri Korean War Veterans Memorial ensuring that this will never be the “forgotten war.” Location: Johnson Shut-Ins State Park, Middle Brook, MO
