Pivotal Point Transitional Housing is a Christ-centered nonprofit organization that seeks to help homeless individuals, families, and youth in our communit

y achieve radical transformation in their lives, both physically and spiritually. Our residents attend weekly Case Management, Budget Counseling, and Life Skills classes, giving them the resources and knowledge to become self-sufficient. While similar programs offer crisis care, or one time assistance, Pivotal Point addresses the total life situation to help our residents become thriving members of our community. We are not government funded, relying on the generous donations of those in our community, and funding from our Thrift Shoppe. If you would like to donate to or visit our Thrift Shoppe, please visit their page for more information. After our 90- to 120-day transitional program, many of our residents go on to our graduate program. They get an extended stay at very low cost while building renter's history. They get more budgeting help and life skills classes because sometimes they set some big goals for themselves and need a little more help to attain that self-sufficiency they pursue.
With only one extended graduate house, that means they stay in their transitional apartment for up to six months.
Our vision is to build or acquire more graduate housing, which would free up our apartments for the transitional program. If you would like to contribute to that vision, there are a number of ways you can do that.

Last week, Pivotal Point Thrift Shoppe was invaded by a band of red-shirt volunteers. Sorting sports cards and donations, stocking clothes and organizers, assembling racks, and sharing smiles all around the store, we are grateful for our friends at Purina for giving their time to serve at our store.

Memorial Day is a day to mourn our deceased service men and women. Originally called Decoration Day, it was formalized in 1868 by Grand Army of the Republic Commander-in-Chief John A. Logan.
Official US code calls on Americans to observe Memorial Day by “praying, according to their individual religious faith, for permanent peace” and proclaims 3:00 pm local time as a National Moment of Remembrance, which began in May 2000.
Today, we remember the countless men and women who have given their lives protecting our freedoms. Today, we honor them for their sacrifice. Today, we pray for peace knowing from where it comes.
“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” -Jesus, John 14:27

Before we were Pivotal Point Transitional Housing, we were part of the network of Hillcrest Transitional Housing Kansas City. And from the very beginning, Rita Maag was there. Rita has been volunteering with our organization since our inception in 2011, when we started with one single apartment and Rita volunteered on the pantry team. Over the last 15 years, as our organization grew into Pivotal Point with an entire adult apartment building and a separate youth building, Rita’s grown right along with us. From that pantry team to budget counseling and case management to her current role, serving in the office and writing our grants. “It’s my gift to God,” Rita explained why she keeps coming back.
We asked Rita what change she would like to see in St. Joe – her big dream for our town. “I would like to see our community have a positive sense of hope. Whether it’s generational poverty or whatever, I would like to see hope in the Lord to enable us and other organizations to solve the problems of homelessness, addiction, poverty, and mental illness.”
Help us thank Rita for 15 years of volunteer service!

Today, we’d like to highlight an outstanding staff member at Pivotal Point Transitional Housing. Ashley Cook has been with Pivotal Point since 2021, when she started as a practicum student while pursuing her bachelor’s in social work. She followed the Lord’s leading, choosing an unpaid position over a paid option. And man, are we glad she did?!
As she pursued her master’s (with honors), she continued to grow here as well, and she now serves as our Director of Program Operations, mentoring our next generation of case managers.
She pours her heart and soul into her work here, and our program and our residents are better for it. Countless times, program graduates have named Ashley as the reason for their success. All because she followed the Lord’s lead.
Her big dream for St. Joe and for Pivotal Point? “Ultimately, I would like to see Pivotal Point obtain more extended graduate homes, obtain or build an additional apartment complex, and build a second youth building to house our male youth clients,” she said. “The need is definitely there, and I believe God will open the right doors at the right time to make these dreams a reality.”
It’s no wonder her coworkers nominated her for Emerging Leader at next month’s Women of Excellence - YWCA St. Joseph Awards! Help us celebrate Ashley today.

We are shouting congratulations to three of our youth residents who graduate from high school this month. They finally walk the stage and receive their diplomas from Benton, Central, and Lafayette. To protect their identities, we won’t mention their names. But we are so incredibly proud of them!
No, your eyes are not mistaken. Only two are pictured. We couldn't pin down the third long enough for a picture.
Please leave encouraging comments below that we can share with them. They have all worked hard to reach this milestone despite the challenges of life along the way.

When we reached out to Chick-fil-A St. Joseph for a fundraiser, we were hoping for something like what we have with Panera – where we get a portion of the sales from everybody who uses our code on a particular day. They offered something different. For two weeks, they would give us a portion of all cookie 6-packs sold in their store.
I thought, “Just cookies? And not individual cookies? Only when people buy 6 at a time? That seems really specific. Who goes to Chick-fil-A to buy 6 cookies?” I didn’t expect much out of this fundraiser.

Then I had a cookie. And y’all.

No wonder people go there for the cookies. And a LOT of people. More than 900 boxes of cookies sold in 2 weeks. To the tune of a $1,000 check the size of a cow to fund our mission of helping the homeless find stability one life at a time. Thank you, St. Joe, for eating a ton of Chick-fil-A cookies. Thank you for believing in what we do. Thank you for caring so much.
