When peak summer temperatures hit, cattle comfort is job number one. High heat and humidity can quickly impact cattle health and performance, but proactive feedyard management makes all the difference.

Here’s how top operations manage heat stress:

1️⃣ Water Availability: Doubling down on water tank inspections, flow rates and tank cleaning to ensure fresh, cool water is always flowing.

2️⃣ Shifted Feeding Times: Delivering the majority of rations in the late afternoon or evening so peak metabolic heat production occurs during cooler night hours.

3️⃣ Airflow & Shade: Utilizing natural windbreaks, installing shade structures and keeping pens dust-free to maximize ventilation.

4️⃣ Minimal Handling: Working or moving cattle strictly in the early morning hours before ambient temperatures rise.
