This Indigenous Peoples Day, we pause to honor the histories, cultures, and ongoing contributions of Indigenous Nations across the country.

Founded in 1948, the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance (formerly known as American Humanics) stands on the homelands of Indigenous Peoples, at the confluence of the Missouri and Kansas Rivers. These ancestral lands are home to the Osage, Kaw, Otoe-Missouria, Shawnee, and Wyandot Nations.

A Message from Our President & CEO, Pherabe Kolb:

September 11, 2001. It’s hard to type out this date without a shudder of memory, a twinge of regret, and a longing to make sense of a tragedy that shook our country to its core. There will be a lot written and shared today about what this date and its aftermath meant, but at the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance we are choosing to shine a light on the charitable spirit it unlocked and how the nonprofit sector met this moment of generational crisis with compassion.

In the days after the terrorist attacks, millions of ordinary Americans stepped forward to give money, donate their time, and lend their hands and hearts to help their communities recover and heal. They were guided in this cause by nonprofit organizations, big and small, national and local, whose professionals and volunteers stepped up immediately to provide care onsite, coordinate blood donations, and gather and distribute supplies and food. As the crisis response turned into a years-long recovery effort, these organizations shifted to providing cash assistance to families who lost loved ones, offering mental health counseling to those traumatized by the experience, and eventually building memorials and museums to honor those lost. This spirit of charity and selfless giving allowed us to reconnect with our own humanity when we needed it most. And it represented the best of what America stands for.

So as we remember and reflect today, we also take a moment to give thanks. To the people who gave help, offered support, and made it possible to move forward. We are grateful and will strive to live up to the standards you have set.
