In this clip Joy Reid explains that the story of Black people in the diaspora isn’t one single experience. She states the three different realities… all rooted in the same system, but shaped in very different ways.

What stands out is how often our conversations flatten that history—as if we all came through the same path, carried the same cultural losses, and rebuilt in the same ways. But the truth is, the African diaspora is layered. Language, traditions, resistance, identity—all of it evolved differently depending on where our ancestors were taken and what they endured.
And that matters.

It matters when we talk about culture.
It matters when we talk about identity.
It matters when we try to understand each other.

Because when we recognize those differences, we also start to see the depth of what was preserved, what was taken, and what was reimagined across generations.

This isn’t about division—it’s about awareness. About honoring the full story, not just the part we were taught.

What’s something you’ve learned about the diaspora that shifted your perspective?

Many of us know pieces of our family story.
A grandparent’s name.
A state our family once lived in.

But beyond that, the trail often feels unclear.
For many Black Americans, tracing ancestry can feel complicated — shaped by history, migration, and gaps in records. Yet our story reaches far beyond what we’ve been told.

Our Origins, Our Stories: A Genealogy Journey is a two-part workshop designed to help you explore your African ancestry with guidance and historical context.

In this experience, you will:
• Learn how to begin tracing your lineage using genealogical tools
• Gain historical understanding of the African diaspora and record systems
• Set up and navigate ancestry research platforms
• Explore and interpret your DNA results with support
• Learn how to research regions, records, and family connections more deeply

If you’ve ever wanted to move from “I wonder” to “I know,” this space was created for you.

🗓 March 14 | 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM

🗓 June 20 | 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Attendance at both sessions is required.

Location details shared upon confirmed registration.

Registration is now open. Limited participation.
