This Shabbat, I want us to think about gratitude as more than something we feel when life goes our way. Jewish tradition asks us to make gratitude a way of living. The first words traditionally spoken each morning are Modeh Ani. “I give thanks before You.” We say them before we know what the day will bring. We do not have to wait for something wonderful to happen before giving thanks. We begin there. Gratitude begins with a few simple words and then shapes the way we live.

This week’s Torah portion begins with the word Re’eh—“See.” Moses asks us to pay attention to the choices that stand before us. Most choices do not seem important when we make them. Most decisions we make before we are certain. A conversation, an act of kindness, or a decision to forgive may feel like a small part of an ordinary day. Yet we cannot know where those choices will lead or whose life they may touch. Judaism does not require us to know the future. It asks us to recognize the opportunities before us and act. This Shabbat, may we learn to see them.

Sometimes we expect prayer to be dramatic—a profound religious experience. This can be misleading. This week we will explore the Rebbe Rashab’s insight that prayer is not meant to transport us out of the world; rather, it is meant to reshape the way we live within it. A sense of wonder is our guide along this path. It leads to an awareness of something greater than ourselves and then back again to where we use that awareness to try to change ourselves and the world. This Shabbat, may we find moments of wonder that inspire us to care for our community, our loved ones, and ourselves.

This Shabbat, instead of our usual services, we will attend Shabbat Unplugged. It’s an effort by Reform KC to bring all of the Reform congregations together. The service will include music by all of the Temple musicians at the three Reform synagogues. This year it is at Beth Torah at 6:30 PM. As it says in the Talmud: "The world will not be redeemed until we become one united group." Please join us! Shabbat Shalom!

As we prepare to welcome Shabbat, we have an opportunity to consider one of Judaism's most important aspirations: practicing chesed/compassion. Compassion is more than an ideal. It is the daily practice of noticing one another and responding with generosity. In a world that encourages us to hurry past one another, Shabbat reminds us that every person carries joys and burdens. Our job is to pay attention to those around us and respond to their needs. May this Shabbat renew our commitment to building a community where no one celebrates or struggles alone.
