From Athens, Paul moves on to Corinth, and this week our church community is spending time in that part of his story.

"Don't be afraid! Speak out! Don't be silent! For I am with you." — Acts 18:9-10 (NLT)

When Paul arrives in Corinth, he doesn't come in with a grand strategy or a team of supporters. He comes in alone, finds Aquila and Priscilla, a couple who happen to share his trade, and settles into ordinary life with them, working as a tentmaker while he figures out what's next. It's easy to skip past that detail, but there's something worth noticing in it. Paul builds real relationships and does honest work before he does any of the preaching he's known for.

Once he does start teaching, things get hard fast. He faces rejection at the synagogue, opposition from the Jewish community, and eventually a formal accusation before the governor. In the middle of all that discouragement, God speaks to Paul in a vision and tells him not to be afraid, to keep speaking, and not to go silent, because there are people in that city who still need to hear what he has to say. Paul stays another year and a half because of that word, and Corinth becomes one of the most significant churches he ever plants.

There's a real lesson in the order of things here. Paul didn't wait until it was easy or until every door was open. He kept showing up, kept building relationships, and kept speaking even when it cost him something. This week, if you're facing a season where speaking up or staying faithful feels risky, remember that you're not doing it alone either. Keep showing up, and trust that it matters more than you can see right now.

Not long after God rescues Israel from slavery in Egypt, one of his first instructions is about how to treat outsiders.

The command is direct: "Do not mistreat or oppress a foreigner, for you were foreigners in Egypt." (Exodus 22:21, NLT) God doesn't just tell his people to be kind to foreigners. He reminds them what it felt like to be foreigners themselves, vulnerable and dependent on how others treated them.

The command to care for the foreigner grows directly out of Israel's own story. Their history of being mistreated becomes the reason they're called to treat others differently.

For us, that's a pattern worth carrying into how we live and work every day. Most of us have a story somewhere, personal or generational, of being new somewhere or dependent on someone else's kindness. That memory should shape how we treat the people around us living that story right now.

This week, let whatever you remember about feeling like an outsider move you toward extending a real welcome to someone experiencing that now.

Creativity has a way of bringing kids together, no matter what language they speak at home.

Adelante Arts Community
This program gives kids from all places a space to explore and develop skills in music, dance, and other arts. A typical night opens with the whole group together, sharing a song and a short devotional, before splitting off into classes based on each kid's artistic interest.

Learn English With Us! People from all places live and work in our neighborhood, and learning English is often one of the biggest steps toward feeling at home here.

Latino ESL Classes
Our adult English program for Spanish speakers has multiple levels and focuses on real conversation, not just textbook grammar. You'll practice speaking with volunteer conversation partners who genuinely want to get to know you, building both your English and real friendships along the way.

Alongside our Latino ESL program, we also offer English classes for refugees building a new life in Kansas City. Just like our Latino classes, the focus is relational and practical, real conversation, real friendship, and real progress toward speaking with confidence.

We're reflecting on the passage our church community is focusing on together. This week, we're in Acts 17:16-34, Paul preaching in Athens.

"For in him we live and move and exist. As some of your own poets have said, 'We are his offspring.'" — Acts 17:28 (NLT)

Paul walks into Athens as a complete outsider. He doesn't speak the language of their philosophy; he isn't part of their intellectual circles, and the culture around him is saturated with idols and ideas that have nothing to do with the God he serves. Instead of standing apart from it all and condemning what he sees, he takes the time to actually look around the city, notice what the Athenians already believe, and find a starting point they can relate to. He even quotes their own poets back to them.

That approach says something important about how we're called to engage with people who see the world differently than we do. Paul didn't water down the truth to make it more comfortable, but he also didn't demand that people meet him on his own cultural terms before he'd even try to reach them. He met them where they were, in their language, in their context, and let that become the bridge to something greater.

Not everyone in Athens responded the same way. Some mocked him, some brushed him off, and a few genuinely believed. That's worth remembering too. Meeting people where they are doesn't guarantee a particular outcome, but it's still the right way to love our neighbors, whoever they are and wherever they're starting from. This week, look for a starting point with someone whose perspective is different from your own, and see where that bridge might lead.

Being a teenager is hard enough. Being a teenager while navigating two cultures, a new language, or a family adjusting to life in a new country adds a whole other layer.

Adelante Youth Club exists to make sure no teen in our neighborhood has to carry that alone.

Every Wednesday evening, teens gather in a space built just for them: a place to express themselves, get homework help, and learn about Jesus, all alongside caring adult mentors who genuinely want to know them. It's not a program that just talks at teens. Volunteers walk with them through real, sometimes difficult life issues, building relationships that last well beyond a single Wednesday night.

Teens here support each other too. Friendships form, trust builds, and slowly, teens start discovering the gifts and passions God has placed inside them, along with the confidence to become leaders in their own community.

People from all places live and work in our neighborhood, and one of the simplest, most relational ways to serve them is by helping them learn English and learn about the US as they work towards becoming a citizen if that is their goal.

Latino ESL Classes
Our adult English program for Spanish speakers has multiple levels, is highly relational, and emphasizes verbal practice. As a volunteer conversation partner, you don't need any specific expertise, and you don't even need to speak another language. You just need to show up, talk, and build a real friendship. The impact runs both ways, since volunteers walk away having learned just as much as they've taught.

Refugee ESL Classes
Alongside our Latino ESL program, we also offer English classes for refugees rebuilding their lives in Kansas City. The heart is the same: relational, practical, and centered on real conversation and friendship, walking alongside neighbors as they learn a new language from the ground up. Our next Refugee ESL classes launch in January, so now's a great time to sign up before the term begins.

Citizenship Classes
Our Citizenship classes help prepare eligible individuals for the USCIS citizenship interview and exam. Volunteers work with students over a 12-week trimester, building real relationships while helping them master the material required for the exam. An important part of the program is also building the English proficiency needed to succeed in the interview itself.

This is about more than grammar and vocabulary. It's walking alongside our neighbors as they navigate a new language, a new culture, and the systems of a new country, and getting to share life and share Jesus along the way.

Every week, we sit with a passage as a church family, and this week it's this one. In Acts 17:1-15, Paul and Silas in Thessalonica and Berea.

"Now the Berean Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so." — Acts 17:11 (NLT)

What stands out most in this passage is the contrast between two cities. In Thessalonica, Paul reasons from the Scriptures for three Sabbaths, and while some believe, others respond with jealousy and stir up a mob that chases Paul and Silas out of town entirely. In Berea, though, something different happens. The people there don't just take Paul's word for it. They search the Scriptures every day to see if what he's teaching is actually true, and their openness leads many of them to faith.

It would have been easy for Paul to see the response in Berea as somehow less impressive than a dramatic riot or a public confrontation. But the Bereans weren't passive, and they weren't gullible either. They were engaged. They were willing to test what they heard against what they knew to be true, and that kind of honest searching is exactly what led them to genuine belief.

This week, we're encouraged to be a little more like the Bereans. Don't just accept things at face value, and don't dismiss them out of hand either. Dig in, ask questions, and search for truth for yourself. Faith that's been tested tends to be faith that lasts.
