Ellen arrived at the Jackson County Courthouse ready to stand up for herself, but she wasn’t sure how to fight a debt she didn’t recognize. A creditor was suing her, and she suspected her abusive ex-husband, Luis, had used her credit card without permission. She brought a police report documenting the abuse, hoping it might help her case.

At the courthouse, Ellen connected with Legal Aid of Western Missouri’s Debt Relief Project. After reviewing her situation, the team matched her with an attorney who helped her use the evidence she had gathered to challenge the fraudulent debt.

With Ellen’s evidence supporting her case, her attorney successfully argued that the debt wasn’t hers. The lawsuit was dismissed, and the debt was removed from her credit report.

Ellen’s determination to seek help and the evidence she brought forward helped her take an important step toward financial stability.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day, at its core, aims to celebrate and honor the past, present, and futures of Native peoples throughout the US and acknowledges the legacy of colonialism, which has devastated Indigenous communities historically and continues to negatively impact them today. More importantly, Indigenous Peoples’ Day moves beyond the narrative of oppression and honors the histories, cultures, contributions, and resilience of contemporary Native peoples.

Whether you are out or choosing not to be for any number of totally valid reasons, we celebrate you -- today and every day!

Artist Keith Haring created the beautifully vibrant image that became the visual identity for the first National Coming Out Day. Tragically, he died from AIDS just two years later, in 1990.
