In 1998, a distinguished Mason and visionary leader, Worshipful Brother Harrison McCallop—widely known as the Grand Craftsman within the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Kansas—recognized the profound need for unity among Masons of all backgrounds and ethnicities. Guided by an unwavering commitment to harmony and universal Brotherhood, he endeavored to bring together Freemasons who, though working in separate jurisdictions, were united by the same Light.
To advance this noble vision, Brother McCallop initiated earnest discussions with both the Grand Master of the Prince Hall F&AM of Kansas (a predominantly African American jurisdiction) and the Grand Master of the AF&AM of Kansas (a predominantly Caucasian jurisdiction). Through these thoughtful and fraternal deliberations, an historic agreement was reached: in the State of Kansas, a Mason could hold joint membership in both Prince Hall F&AM and AF&AM, irrespective of race, background, or station in life. The only essential qualification was, and remains, that the Brother be of honorable character and free from inner reservations or concealed motives.
To commemorate and symbolize this unprecedented act of unity, Brother McCallop crafted a remarkable wooden gavel—one half fashioned from oak and the other from pine, representing Black and White standing together as one. This gavel, a powerful emblem of fraternal concord, is preserved to this day within the Kansas Grand Lodge and is slated for placement in the forthcoming Kansas Archives Museum.
On February 28, 2026, the spirit of that historic agreement was once again brought to life. Both Grand Lodges assembled in full fraternal harmony to jointly confer the Third Degree. In a display of exemplary cooperation, the AF&AM brethren conducted the first half of the ritual, with the Prince Hall F&AM brethren completing the second half.
This event proved to be not only a success, but a monumental and inspiring undertaking—one destined to be remembered as a landmark moment of unity, respect, and Masonic brotherhood in the State of Kansas.
