We are so grateful to St. Margaret of Scotland in Lee's Summit for hosting monthly food drives. Last week, Deacon David and Deacon Paul delivered nearly 500 pounds of food to The Market.

The Serve&Lift Market has a free choice model where neighbors like Dorothy can choose the foods they want. Not only does this make for a better experience but it dramatically reduces food waste.

You never know what you'll find at The Serve&Lift Market, like this "cucuzza" (pronounced "gagootz") we got in. It's a kind of zucchini that's popular in Sicily and is a big hit at The Market too. Erin says you can actually see them grow!

Now, the big question for this big squash, what should we make from it? Soup? Fritters? An enormous loaf of cucuzza bread? Other ideas?

Last week kicked off our participation in Harvesters - The Community Food Network's BackSnack program. With the program kids get backpacks full of snacks (a.k.a. "Backsnacks") to ensure they have healthy food away from school too. The BackSnacks include green beans, juice, cheese crackers, apple sauce, tuna, milk, cereal, mac and cheese, and granola bars.

A BIG thank you to the Colberns for volunteering to deliver the BackSnacks to area schools!

It was a wonderful day of connecting with our neighbors, sharing resources, and learning more about the support available around Cameron.

Hunter and Luke Kane have been volunteering with us as part of their service hours at St. Michael the Archangel. There are so many ways students can pitch in. All of our programs are happy if someone wants to lend a hand, and there are also opportunities to support special events like BoysGrow Farm Fest, like the Kane brothers did this summer.

Everything we do is grounded in Catholic social teaching. In preparation for the launch of a new initiative at Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph, Sister Mariana of the Sisters Poor of Jesus Christ joined staff to discuss how the new program reflects our Catholic values and calls us to walk alongside our neighbors with compassion, hope, and respect.
