πŸŽ‰β€οΈπŸ’›πŸ’š Celebrating Juneteenth at the Providence YMCA/Ball Family Center! πŸ’šπŸ’›β€οΈπŸŽ‰
We started the day with β˜• coffee and 🍩 doughnuts while getting to know our new Executive Director, Stacy Stephens. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect, share stories, and celebrate community.
We were honored to welcome Nakia Hope Paul from the Old Quindaro Museum, who gave an incredible presentation about the rich history of this area and the vital role it played in helping enslaved people find freedom. πŸ“–βœ¨ Her knowledge and passion brought this important chapter of history to life and reminded us why Juneteenth continues to be such a meaningful celebration of freedom, resilience, and hope.
Thank you to everyone who joined us as we reflected on the past, celebrated progress, and strengthened our commitment to building a more inclusive future. πŸ€πŸΎβ€οΈπŸ–€πŸ’š

June 2026 - A FITNESS JOURNEY SERIES FOR AND ABOUT THE PROVIDENCE YMCA’S ACTIVE ADULT COMMUNITY

Member Spotlight - Carolyn Sandifer

As told to Justin Brantley,

Hi, I’m Carolyn Sandifer, retired lab technician in 2016 and a member of the YMCA since 2016. Before retiring, my main exercise was my line dance class. Even though I was doing some kind of exercise, I was having issues with my knees and shoulders. After getting cortisone shots, my goal was not to get them again. Also I had gained weight that I couldn’t get rid of.
I used Weight Watchers to help me lose weight and working out at the Y helps me keep it off. I am much lighter on my feet and steps are not as challenging.
I actually love using the equipment and going to classes when I can because it helps me stay on track with my health goals.
I’ve only had shots in my knees and shoulders once, about 20 years ago. I can’t say that I’ll never have to do it again, but I hope to keep working out and do as much as I can to prevent it.
My daughter, Joselyn, is my biggest supporter. She wants me to be healthy and stick around as long as possible. And I want to be able to continue to walk and drive and go and do and not be a burden to her. And most of all, I give all glory to God and Jesus Christ my Savior.

Every child should have access to swimming. Providence Ymca is proud to be a collection location for the Levi Banks Memorial swim suit drive. These swim suits will be collected in memory of Levi who lost his life due to drowning. Suits will be given to KCKPS students in our Safety Around Water program to ensure all youth have access to drowning prevention and a safe, fun relationship with the water!

Composting Basics at the Providence YMCA! 🌱

We had a great time hosting our Composting Basics Workshop at the Providence YMCA / Ball Family Center! Thank you to everyone who joined us for this interactive and hands-on session.

Led by Dylan Parsley, Horticulture Agent with K-State Research & Extension, members learned the fundamentals of composting and how to turn everyday organic waste into nutrient-rich soil for their gardens.

🌱 During the workshop, attendees explored:
β€’ How composting works
β€’ The difference between β€œgreens” and β€œbrowns”
β€’ Proper moisture and airflow balance
β€’ Composting methods and bin options
β€’ Tips for troubleshooting common issues

🌼 Participants also had the opportunity to visit our Providence Garden, where they learned additional gardening tips and saw sustainable practices in action.

As a special reminder of the impact of our garden, the final photo highlights onions, radishes, and lettuce harvested from the Providence Garden and donated to our food pantry to help provide fresh produce to members of our community.

It was a wonderful opportunity to connect, learn, and take steps toward more sustainable living right here in our community. πŸŒŽπŸ’š
