Heartland Center for Jobs and Freedom

Heartland Center for Jobs and Freedom The Heartland Center for Jobs & Freedom hosts workshops & provides legal services to low-wage workers We take our name from the 1963 March on Washington.

The lesser-known but full name of the march was the “March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.” When tens of thousands of Americans gathered that day, they called for an end to discrimination and segregation. They also called for full employment and living wages. The Heartland Center draws its vision from those who believed that racial equality and good jobs for all were not only imperative, but

inextricably bound and critical to the welfare of our entire nation. The Heartland Center for Jobs & Freedom, directed by Gina Chiala, hosts workshops and provides legal services to low-wage workers in the areas of consumer law (such as debt collection abuses), employment law (wage theft, employment discrimination, background check abuses), and landlord-tenant law. We also provide leadership training to low-wage workers who are leading social justice movements to improve working conditions and the economy. We are the only organization in the region that actively empowers low-wage workers with the tools they need to fight back when their rights are violated. Heartland Center is proud to create the new Justice Through Movement award.

Next year, this award will be honored to a local attorney who demonstrates the power of law as a tool for progress, healing, and transformation.

How will they be chosen? By YOU.

Who would you nominate?

This Juneteenth, we affirm our commitment to building a nation that is truly free, just and democratic for all.

The Black struggle is an American struggle. Slavery, segregation, and racial discrimination have stood in stark contradiction to our nation's promise of freedom and equality for all.

What kind of nation do we want to be?

Juneteenth marked the end of slavery and ushered in the passage of the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments, moving our nation closer to its promise of freedom and liberty for all. The Ku Klux Klan then dragged our nation backward into the dark ages.

Now, authoritarian forces are doing the same. They are trying to abolish the right to due process and the inclusive definition of citizenship guaranteed by the 14th Amendment - won by the abolitionist movement.

We understand that racism + capitalism has long been the tool that divides working people from winning a truly humane society.

"Freedom for all" can only be won when we truly mean ALL. A divided nation is weak and cannot deliver on the common good: healthcare for all, good jobs for all, good housing for all.

This summer, we are welcoming four UMKC Law School Interns: Kelee, Sydney, Isabella, and Claire!

Not only will our interns get hands-on experience in all our programs, they will also participate in our new Summer Brown Bag Series.

This series is designed to deepen interns' understanding of public interest legal careers and the housing justice landscape in Kansas City. The series includes conversations with practitioners, explorations of local housing issues, and visits to federal courthouses. Our interns will get a front-row seat to the systems and institutions at the heart of our advocacy.

Welcome George and Kaitlyn!

Heartland is excited to welcome two undergraduate students into our summer internship program. George and Kaitlyn will be working alongside our staff across all of our legal programs: from tenant rights litigation and habitable housing advocacy, to community outreach and investigative research, our interns are jumping in on the full breadth of HCJF's work.

George chose to intern at Heartland so he can give back to his home community of Kansas City. He's excited to learn how legal organizations like HCJF can systemically transform KC.

Kaitlyn, who learned about us from her Stepdad, decided to intern with us because she's passionate about law + activism. She wants to learn how legal nonprofits operate, and how we represent our clients.

Did you know rodents, mice, and bed bugs threaten health and safety? In fact, mice and roaches cause asthma and other respiratory illnesses, and contribute to higher rates of illness in Black communities where landlord neglect is most prevalent.

Pest problems are unacceptable and that is why we are sharing the methods ALL landlords should be using to keep your home pest free. It's your legal right!

Property Managers using a proper Assessment-Based Pest Management
plan can AND should effectively manage pests at properties.

This post is a part of our "Tenant Toolkit: Managing Pests in Multi-Family Housing."

While these documents are intended for Landlords, it is also a tool for Tenants to organize for tangible results and to have a certified model with accountable and actionable steps.

Very big thank you to Joe Jonovich, a Board Certified Entomologist and our Pest Expert, for sharing these pest documents with us!

🔗 Go to our website under "Toolkits for Tenants" to download our toolkits.

💥 Demand that your landlord adopt this protocol and provide a pest-free environment.

🌈 For Pride Month, we’re celebrating Bayard Rustin (1912 - 1987). He was a prolific organizer, civil rights leader, and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights.

🌈 Rustin organized Freedom Rides, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and the first March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Along with other labor leaders, he formed the group “In Friendship,” which provided legal assistance to tenant farmers facing eviction. He also worked within AFL-CIO to integrate unions and promote unionization among Black workers.

🌈 Rustin was open about his s*xuality to those who knew him, despite the threat of criminalization at that time. However, because of homophobia in the larger society, he often acted as an advisor in the background instead of taking a more public role in movements. In the 1980’s, at the encouragement of his partner, he engaged publicly in gay rights activism and testified for legal protections for LGBTQ+ people. His friendship with Thurgood Marshall played a role in Marshall’s decision to dissent on Bowers v. Hardwick, a landmark case regarding states criminalizing consensual s*x between men.

🌈 We all owe so much to Rustin and his tireless organizing for labor protections, civil rights, and nonviolent protest.

Meet Gary Rhoades, Heartland Center's new Executive Director starting today, June 1, 2026.

As we begin Heartland Center’s next chapter, we know that our new Executive Director and Leadership Team will lead us to win tenant and worker rights across Missouri, alongside the people we serve.

Fun fact about Gary: he and his wife Christina have a small hay farm outside of Warrensburg, and from there for the past 11 years have hosted an annual concert series called Silofest.
