Endorsement from a convicted ex-KCPD officer an affront to social justice | Opinion
We should all “back the blue,” says Toriano Porter. That doesn’t mean aligning with an ex-cop who wrongfully killed a man in his own backyard.

KCLEAP statement on former KCPD officer, Eric Devalkenaere’s endorsement of congressional candidate, Nathan Willett:

Eric DeValkenaere’s decision to step back into the political spotlight and throw his support behind a congressional candidate is outrageous and offensive to the Lamb family and the broader Kansas City community.

Let’s be clear: he has never served his full prison sentence. That was cut short by political intervention from the governor—not because accountability was achieved. Justice in this case was interrupted, and the harm from that decision still reverberates today.

For DeValkenaere to now position himself as someone whose endorsement carries weight is not only arrogant—it is a blatant disregard for the life he took and the family still living with that loss. It sends a dangerous message that even after a conviction, even after taking a life, there are no lasting consequences if you wear a badge.

This is exactly what is wrong with the system. Former KCPD officers who commit harm are still afforded platforms, influence, and protection, while families like Cameron Lamb’s are left to pick up the pieces.

KCLEAP rejects that reality. We will not stay silent while those responsible for police violence attempt to rebrand themselves or regain public influence. We stand with the Lamb family, and we will continue to demand full accountability—no exceptions, no shortcuts, and no political rehabilitation for those who have taken lives.

This is not leadership. This is a failure of accountability—and we will continue to call it out.

Crime prevention doesn’t start with more policing - it starts with investment in people.

Kansas City continues to face a growing homelessness crisis, while KCPD receives historic levels of funding year after year. Yet we’re told the answer is always more police.

We know that isn’t working.

Real safety looks like stable housing, accessible mental health care, quality education, and living-wage jobs. It looks like investing in communities - not over-policing them.

KCLEAP believes it’s time to shift our priorities.
Fund programs. Build opportunity. Create real safety.

Demanding transparency and holding officers accountable are things that KCLEAP fights for every single day. 💛

That’s why we want to share a resource that helps push this work forward: the Public Accountability Report.

This tool allows you to look up allegations against officers, explore patterns of misconduct, and even file complaints. Access to information is power—and this is one more tool in our arsenal to demand better.

Accountability starts with awareness.
