Get the chance to bid on Zebra by artist Seth Smith TONIGHT at reStart’s Art Auction from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the Leedy-Voulkos Art Center in the Crossroads.

This striking 24 x 18 inch oil on panel painting showcases Smith’s mastery of light, shadow, and stillness.

A lifelong Kansan, Seth Smith earned his degree in painting and printmaking from the University of Kansas in 2003, where he studied under renowned artists Cima Katz, Michael Krueger, and Roger Shimomura. Since then, he has built an impressive body of work spanning both abstract and representational painting, earning a devoted following among private and corporate collectors alike.

Smith draws inspiration from the simple yet profound experiences that shape our lives: the glow of artificial light, the movement of shadows, the sound of wind through trees, birdsong in the morning, and the fleeting moments before sunset. His work reflects a deep appreciation for atmosphere, memory, and place.

Get the chance to bid on Night Ball, a 2024 acrylic on canvas by artist Daniel Montoute, at reStart’s Art Auction this Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the Leedy-Voulkos Art Center in the Crossroads.

This powerful work pays tribute to the Kansas City Monarchs and the groundbreaking innovation of night baseball in the historic 18th & Vine District. Framed in handcrafted, blowtorch-charred wood, the piece reflects both the grit and resilience of the community it honors. Night Ball transforms a historic legacy into a vivid exploration of nightlife, motion, and cultural endurance in Kansas City.

Born in the U.S. Virgin Islands, his practice spans painting, mixed media, and civic engagement. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and his projects often explore resilience, displacement, and the beauty found within struggle.

Through Montoute Arts, he has also built platforms that connect art, community, and economic opportunity, producing civic exhibitions and programs that expand access and impact.

The Gem Theater

Get the chance to bid on this striking oil painting of Kansas City’s historic 18th & Vine District by artist Mark Mohr at reStart’s Art Auction this Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the Leedy-Voulkos Art Center in the Crossroads.

This 16” x 22’ work captures the layered history and cultural depth of one of Kansas City’s most significant neighborhoods. Through atmosphere and composition, Mohr reflects not just buildings and streets, but the feeling of a place that has shaped generations of music, art, and community.

Raised west of Wichita, Kansas, Mark Mohr grew up between rural quiet and city access, a contrast that continues to inform his artistic vision. After earning his Fine Arts degree from Wichita State University, he built a career in commercial art before returning fully to fine art in watercolor and oil. His work has earned national recognition, including honors for his children’s book illustrations, and his cityscapes and landscapes continue to explore how we connect to the environments we inhabit.

reStart Staff Spotlight: Ellyn Hunter, Executive Assistant to CEO 💙

Manhattan, KS-raised and Kansas City-rooted, Ellyn Hunter is a UMKC Studio Art graduate with a background in administrative and client-facing roles. She loves connecting with people and brings that passion to her work at reStart. Outside of work, she is a wife, traveler, and proudly managed by five dogs and one very opinionated cat.

“My favorite moment at reStart so far has been serving as a navigator at Project Homeless Connect. The gentleman I was partnered with left that afternoon knowing he had stable housing and would not have to return to the street that night. It was a powerful reminder that this work creates real, immediate change in people’s lives.”

Thank you for all that you do, Ellyn!
