REMEMBERING THE LIFE OF SOROR SANDRA BLAND

Five years ago today, our soror Sandra Bland died in police custody after a routine traffic stop. Today, we remember her as an outspoken change agent for social justice and equality. Saying her name is important because Black women and girls are also affected by police violence. Crystal LaShelle Wilburn is a senior with a 3.4 GPA at the University of Missouri- Kansas City. She is a Liberal Arts Major with a minor in Mass Communications. Also, she is the Lead Registrar for Central High in Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS). As the Head Cheer Coach, she leads her cheerleaders in serving the community. In her free time, she enjoys serving as a coordinator for the Back to School Rallys in KCPS, mentoring for Central's Women Empowerment, sponsoring the Freshmen class at Central, and coordinating events throughout KCPS. Last, she enjoys cooking, running, playing basketball, and cheering.

T’Keyah Thompson is a senior here at The University of Missouri - Kansas City. T’Keyah is majoring in Psychology with a minor in Criminal Justice. She is part of the UMKC track and field team. She aspires to use her degree to open her own facility for children dealing with trauma, neglect and any form of abuse.

Gayle Mack-Mason, is a Junior at the University of Missouri- Kansas City; and a member of the Honors College with a 3.74 GPA. She is majoring in Communications and her minor is in Sociology.

Additionally, she is a Traveling Elder in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and is currently serving as pastor of Russell Chapel CME Church in Columbia, Mo. Along with pastoring, she is also the Young Adult Director for KS/MO Region of the Third Episcopal District of the CME Church and former Youth and Young Adult Director at Jamison Memorial Temple in Kansas City, Mo.

Lastly, in her free time, she enjoys serving as a Success Mentor for KCMO Public Schools, being a part of The Methodist Minister's Fellowship, facilitating Courageous Life Outreach Bible study group, Airbnb hosting and crafting.

Ja’Lyn Grayson is a junior at the University of Missouri- Kansas City and is majoring in Theatre. She was born and raised here in Kansas City, Missouri, and attended Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts where she majored in music. Ja’Lyn’s passion has always been to sing and act on broadway. While at UMKC, she has acted in 2 Playwright Project’s. Once she receives her bachelor’s degree in Theatre, she plans to get her master’s degree in Theatre Education and become a theatre teacher.
