Prevention is widely recognized as an effective, efficient, and economically sound approach because it stops complications before they start, maximizes limited resources, and delivers a massive return on investment.

Preventing child abuse and neglect means meeting parents exactly where they are while also putting the health and safety of children first. Prevention makes keeping children and families together—safely—the top priority in any child welfare system.

There is a common misconception that child welfare intervention is primarily about the most extreme and heartbreaking cases that make headlines. Those cases do require immediate action. But the reality is that many families who come to the attention of child welfare—and drive up unmanageable caseload numbers—are facing challenges that could have been addressed much earlier with the right supports in place: a parent overwhelmed by circumstances, a family without stable housing or child care, a medical emergency, or a caregiver without anyone to call for help.

But we have also witnessed the opposite: when families receive timely support—safe child care during moments of crisis, access to basic necessities, connection to resources, and ongoing community-based support—the outcome changes drastically. Families stabilize. Parents gain confidence and tools. Children remain safely connected to the people who love them, and the child welfare system has no reason to get involved.

This is why we exist. Children Safe. Families Together.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Safe Families for Children (SFFC) stands alongside survivors. Our mission is to keep children safe and surround families facing crisis with a supportive community.

By offering a safe, temporary home for children and a network of extended family-like support for parents, we give moms and dads the breathing room they need to seek help, find safety, and rebuild their lives.

Imagine a mom in Kansas City going through a difficult season.

She doesn’t need one person to come in and fix everything. She needs people.

One person who can answer the phone when she’s had a hard day. A family willing to provide a safe place for her children while she takes the steps need to strengthen and stabilize her family. Someone who knows where to find the practical resource she needs. People who will remind her that she isn’t facing everything by herself.

Now imagine those people already know each other.

They’re part of the same small group. They attend church together. They’re neighbors, coworkers, or simply a group of friends who have already learned how to show up for one another.

What if they decided to show up for a local family, too? 😊

That’s something we would love to see more of right here in our communities! Groups of people bringing their different gifts, resources, relationships, and availability together to form a Circle of Support around a family.

You don’t all have to serve in the same way. You just have to be willing to explore what saying yes together could look like.

Safe Families for Children KC is excited to be building a partnership with Community Threads KC in Olathe, KS. Like Safe Families, they come alongside individuals and families that may be experiencing financial hardship, job-loss, housing instability and homelessness, or domestic violence...and oftentimes, lack of a basic necessity - clothing.

Executive Director and Founder, Shelly White, saw the downstream effects that clothing insecurity can have and the gap between the need for clothing assistance and the experience people had when trying to access it.

Through a welcoming clothing boutique shopping experience, individuals and families can get new and gently used clothing and accessories at no cost and without barriers or judgement. They can also enjoy a fresh cup of coffee or cool glass of water on a comfortable chair or couch in the lobby before they shop with a personal shopper. And, they leave with restored confidence, hope, dignity, and community around them. We've seen it first-hand, as we have taken some parents and children there already.

Community Threads KC is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit that just opened their doors on July 8th. They are volunteer-driven and built on community generosity.

A simple gift can make an everyday need a little easier.

We’re currently receiving requests from families we’re partnering with for help with fuel and groceries.

Fuel cards help parents get to work, appointments, and where their children need to go. Walmart gift cards help families put groceries on the table during a difficult season.

Safe Families for Children KC is grateful to partner with The Single Mom KC in Overland Park, who like us, walks alongside single moms bearing the full responsibility of parenthood and provisioning for their family...and very often during life's challenges like: unemployment, mental health, domestic violence, hospitalization, homelessness, and especially loneliness and isolation.

Through their mission, The Single Mom KC invites single moms into supportive community, equips their families in spiritual and emotional growth, and provides access to an array of resources. With monthly programs and workshops (including infant care and child programs), Hope Ambassadors that connect moms to vital resources, and their no cost Clothed with Dignity specialty boutique, The Single Mom KC leads moms to healing, restoration, and empowerment.

We're so grateful for the opportunity to serve alongside one another while supporting a space that brings so much joy to the community. Days like these remind us that making a difference doesn't always look the same; it starts with showing up, lending a hand, and working together.
