On Wed Feb. 22, Kansas City's Neighborhood Planning and Development Committee is considering a tree protection ordinance aimed at saving wooded parcels of at least one acre on parcels in line for residential or commercial development. This would require developers to maintain many of the trees around the perimeter of their projects. They could opt instead to plant new saplings or ay a fine into a tree fund. However, because older trees sequester much more carbon, keeping them would be far more effective. Growing the urban forest was one strategy listed in the city's climate protection plan, passed in August. Plans like that mean NOTHING if we don't act on them. Without intervention, the city's tree canopy will shrink by about 330 acres every year. Mayor Lucas supports this ordinance; many developers do not. Please send a note of support to [email protected] by Monday, Feb. 20. In the subject line, type "Support Ord. 220961." Also, on Feb. 22 come to the 26th floor of City Hall. Bring a sign and a comment during the 1:30PM meeting!

On Feb. 7 and 8, two city committees will hold hearings about a tree protection ordinance aimed at saving large swaths of trees – anything bigger than one contiguous acre of woods – on parcels in line for residential or commercial development. Woods of this size exist mostly on the edge of town.

Ordinance 220961 would require developers to maintain many of the trees around the perimeter of their projects. They could opt instead to plant more saplings or to pay a fine. However, because older trees sequester much more carbon, keeping them would be far more effective.

Growing the urban forest was one strategy listed in the city’s climate plan, passed in October. Plans like that mean nothing if we don’t act on them. Also, it’s estimated that without intervention, the city’s tree canopy will lose 330 acres a year.

Mayor Lucas supports this ordinance. Many developers do not.

Please send a note of support to [email protected] no later than Monday morning. In the subject line, type “support Ordinance 220961.” This should reach all members of the two committees.

If you can, please bring a sign and a comment to one or both of the meetings. The Plan Commission meets at 9 on Tuesday, Feb. 7. The Neighborhood Planning and Development Committee meets at 1:30 on Wednesday, Feb. 8. Both are in the council chamber on the 26th floor of City Hall.

Thank you for advocating for a greener KC.

HB 580 would disallow local governments to set their own energy-efficiency standards — including more environmentally sound standards like those already approved in Kansas City in October (IECC 2021). MO legislature shouldn't be entitled to override our wishes! Take QUICK ACTION with these steps:

1) Click here to HB 580's testimony page: https://tinyurl.com/besw8rxh
2) Make sure to select the Hearing "Government Efficiency and Downsizing"
3) Select the Bill "HB 580 - Houx - CONSTRUCTION STANDARDS"
4) Testify as an "Individual"
5) Reason as "In Opposition To"
6) Leave written comment in the Statement section

Finally, share this message with your Missouri-based friends and family!

The Kansas City Council on Thursday postponed for two weeks a vote on the enhanced energy-efficiency standards that local climate activists have been advocating for months. The reason: Mayor Quinton Lucas was out of town, and it looked like the council might need him to break a tie. Those in the know think the council vote at this point might be 6 to 6, and that the mayor is likely to support passage of the 2021 Int'l Energy Conservation Code. We will need to keep lobbying the council especially the members who are wobbling on this matter: Kevin McManus and Lee Barnes. We will send out an activist alert with details in a few days.

TL;DR: it seems like the odds of success are looking up. But don't let up on your calls and emails to your representatives! Continue to show support the passing of the new energy efficiency standards bill.

Time is very short! We need YOU to act in the next few hours. Encourage the KC Council to pass the new energy efficiency standards that will help us to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. After many months of postponing action, the city's neighborhood committee yesterday punted this issue to the full council, which meets today at 3. The committee, which is not very supportive of the 2021 IECC standards, opted not to vote on the matter and to pass it to the full council. The council apparently is split on this issue: 5 in favor, 5 opposed, with 3 on the fence.

Before 1PM TODAY, please contact the following people and let them know that you want this to pass. Don't know what to say? Here's your script: "I'm a citizen and voter in Kansas City, and I am concerned for the climate. I'm concerned for our children's future. Reducing our city's energy use is a critically important factor in a sustainable climate. Please pass the building efficiency standards bill today."
