On Feb. 7 and 8, two city committees will hold hearings about a tree protection ordinance aimed at saving large swaths of trees – anything bigger than one contiguous acre of woods – on parcels in line for residential or commercial development. Woods of this size exist mostly on the edge of town.
Ordinance 220961 would require developers to maintain many of the trees around the perimeter of their projects. They could opt instead to plant more saplings or to pay a fine. However, because older trees sequester much more carbon, keeping them would be far more effective.
Growing the urban forest was one strategy listed in the city’s climate plan, passed in October. Plans like that mean nothing if we don’t act on them. Also, it’s estimated that without intervention, the city’s tree canopy will lose 330 acres a year.
Mayor Lucas supports this ordinance. Many developers do not.
Please send a note of support to [email protected] no later than Monday morning. In the subject line, type “support Ordinance 220961.” This should reach all members of the two committees.
If you can, please bring a sign and a comment to one or both of the meetings. The Plan Commission meets at 9 on Tuesday, Feb. 7. The Neighborhood Planning and Development Committee meets at 1:30 on Wednesday, Feb. 8. Both are in the council chamber on the 26th floor of City Hall.
Thank you for advocating for a greener KC.
