On this day in 2019, Unity Temple was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list as part of The 20th-Century Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. It was recognized for how Wright used a single material, reinforced concrete, to create bold geometric forms and an entirely new kind of space, expressed honestly rather than hidden behind ornament.

Community Christian Church shares those same ideas: a building where the structure itself is the statement, using material and form to create a space that draws people together in fellowship.

The Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy led the 15-year effort to secure a place for Wright’s buildings on the World Heritage list, and continues to lead the work of protecting them all. The ideas about how to design and live that are embodied in Wright’s buildings must be experienced to be understood, and they must be preserved to be experienced.

We recently hosted a group from of students from St. Teresa's Academy as part of the interim class in architecture. Judy Robinette, our board secretary, led the tour - she's loaded with great information, technical and anecdotal.

Wright on Main will begin to offer organized, scheduled tours of Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Community Christian Church in 2026. Stay tuned for more info!

Elizabeth and Jan are in Philadelphia meeting up with other recipients of this year’s Fund For Sacred Places grants, including the team from Bethany Lutheran Church in Lindsborg, Kansas. (They all got to test out George Washington’s pew at Christ Church.)

Along with meeting people from Seattle, New Hampshire, Boston, and Maine, they were introduced to staff members from the fund, including Rachel Hildebrandt, senior Director of the National Fund for Sacred Places.

Elizabeth and Jan are in Philadelphia for training and program orientation with the National Fund for Sacred Spaces. The Fund holds the training for each year’s cohort of grantees and helps us better understand the timeline and requirements of the grant; provides expertise on capital campaign fundraising (we are required to match the $160k grant we received); and so we can get to know and network with our peers.

This is a matching grant, so we have to come up with an additional $160K to complete weatherization of our historic - and extremely unique - Frank Lloyd Wright building.

Big news!!

We have received a $160,000 grant from the National Fund for Sacred Places, a program within the Partners for Sacred Places in collaboration with the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

As The Kansas City Star reporter Eric Adler says, "When famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed what is now the modern, white Community Christian Church just east of Kansas City’s County Club Plaza, he reportedly declared it to be fireproof, earthquake proof and vermin proof. Waterproof, not so much."

This grant will help us secure the building from further water damage. Thank you to Partners for Sacred Places and The National Trust for helping us maintain our unique piece of American history!

The church, known for its ‘Steeple of Light” at 4601 Main, had sustained significant water damage over 83 years.

THIS WEEKEND - OCTOBER 11, 2025 at 1 PM: Join KCMODERN for a tour of the two most important examples of Modernist religious architecture in Kansas City. The tour includes access to our very own Community Christian Church by Frank Lloyd Wright and St. Francis Xavier Church by Barry Byrne (an apprentice to Wright.)

These churches from 1942 and 1950 respectively represent the post WWII movement away from the traditional ecclesiastical styles such as Gothic, Romanesque and Classical. Going forward from this point Modernism would be the style du jour for Kansas City Sacred Architecture. Both of these churches were recognized recently for their importance with listings on the National Register of Historic Places and we are fortunate to have the people responsible for shepherding these projects through that process acting as our guides to these magnificent examples of Modern Places of Worship.
