Brothers & Sisters,
On Tuesday April 2nd we have a chance to help guide and shape the future of the Sports teams in Kansas City. Voting YES on Question 1 is important for businesses, Union Labor and our community. It will keep the Chiefs/Royals in Jackson County for generations to come. Over the last decade, these two teams have brought us back-to-back World Series with one World Series Trophy, 4 Super Bowls and 3 Super Bowl Trophies! I know there's a lot of questions as well as misinformation concerning this I will try to address:
This is an extension of an existing tax. It's a sale tax on items purchased in Jackson County. Everyone pays it whether you live in Kansas, Texas or Nebraska...if you purchase anything in Jackson County Missouri, you pay it. To put in perspective, it's about $.08 cents off a $20 pizza or $.38 cents off a $100 grocery bill. This is a tax that has existed since the early 70's, but better a deal for the taxpayers of Jackson County on a tax that primary goes to the maintenance and upkeep of the two stadiums.
With the elimination of the park tax & insurance, the County stands to receive more than $200 million during the life of this proposal. The Chiefs bring an economic impact of over $993 million annually to the Kansas City area and over $572 million to Jackson County alone. The loss of either one of these teams would have a disastrous effect on the region. The County would still own the stadiums and would be responsible for the maintenance & upkeep…even if the teams go away...only now minus the economic revenue.
The Royals/Chiefs brought on the Union Building Trades of Kansas City from the start of this and have committed to build it using 100% Union Labor. That's over 5000 Union construction jobs. In turn, the Building Trades stressed the importance of taking care of any businesses affected by the project, whether it was the owners of the properties or the tenants. The teams agreed and proposed a $260 million dollar Community Benefits Agreement...The largest in the history of Kansas City Sports. This will invest into education, affordable housing, and job programs.
Then there's the argument, he's a billionaire...he can build his own stadium! That's true...but, then the city, community and Unions have no buy in or leverage to bargain. They can use whoever they want to build it and have no incentive to sign any CBA or give anything back to the community.
Kansas City is going to expand and change like everything always does. With the momentum Kansas City has at this time, we’d be foolish not to take this opportunity to continue to expand our status. The purpose of this isn't to browbeat anyone or give an ultimatum...it's simply to educate. Please weigh out all this before you go to the polls and please consider voting YES on Question 1.
In Solidarity,
Bo Moreno
