We watch in horror as the federal government of the United States rips families apart, kidnaps children, and murders its citizens in broad daylight.  To be clear, Black and Brown communities have experienced this exact treatment since the birth of this forsaken nation.

But now it could be anyone, and now people are paying attention.  Now you can’t hide behind the cloak of whiteness.  What the people of Minneapolis are experiencing is a nightmare–terrorism conducted by our own government. 

My soul is aching.  Lives lost to senseless government-sanctioned violence.  Children snatched from their parents’ arms.  And I’ve seen this institutional violence firsthand.  And please know that it seems so small in comparison to everything that is happening in the world.

Last month, I was sexualized and brutalized by a powerful institution I trusted and revered, and there were zero consequences.  I was a “good” victim.  I reported immediately.  I followed the protocol.  But nothing fu***ng happened. NOTHING. Something withing my spirit is broken irrevocably.

And this is America’s horrific pattern, and it is all connected.  Open your eyes.  See this country for what it is.  Believe victims.  We need justice.  We need recourse.  We need each other.  Lives on the Line is my rock and my community. We will continue to amplify the voices and organizations helping marginalized groups and boots-on-the-ground operations in Minnesota.

It is up to us.  Talk to your friends and neighbors and family members who “don’t do politics.”  If it happened to a 40-year-old white lawyer, it can and very well will, happen to you.  Use your voice.  It is the VERY LEAST you can do.  BE BRAVE.
