Pope Leo XIV delivered a message of solidarity with migrants, emphasizing their humanity, dignity, and personal stories.

Addressing those who have left their homes in search of safety or opportunity, the pope said migrants should not be reduced to statistics or bureaucratic cases. Instead, he urged people to recognize them as individuals with families, dreams, and lives worthy of respect.

Welcome back and congratulations!

EXCITING NEWS! We are thrilled to finally announce that Debbie Espinosa has been selected as our new president and CEO! Her first official day with us will be August 31.

Debbie joins us from FIND Food Bank, a fellow Feeding America network food bank serving California’s Greater Palm Springs desert region, where she served as President and CEO since 2018.

She is a seasoned nonprofit leader with more than 30 years of experience, spanning local, regional, national and international organizations, which gives her a broad perspective on addressing complex community challenges through collaboration and innovation.

Debbie actually began her early days right here in Kansas City as an intern at Harvesters where she worked on leadership development through the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance. She graduated from Rockhurst University with bachelor’s degrees in Sociology and Comparative Religion, along with a minor in Nonprofit Management.

“I am honored to join Harvesters and return to a community that played such an important role in shaping my personal and professional journey,” said Espinosa. “Many of the values that have guided my career in service, collaboration, and a commitment to helping others thrive were strengthened through the mentors, colleagues, and experiences I had in Kansas City. Over the years, I have admired Harvesters’ leadership, innovation, and commitment to serving people in need with dignity and compassion. I look forward to listening, learning, and working alongside the dedicated staff, Board of Directors, volunteers, donors, and community partners who make this organization’s impact possible every day. Together, we will build on Harvesters’ strong foundation and continue to innovate food security systems to best serve our neighbors across our region.”

Verse of the day:
Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, my beloved.
- Philippians 4:1

Voice of the day:
Our struggle is practical. It’s high and holy, but it’s right down here on earthly ground. So let’s fight the good fight of faith. Let’s do what we have to do, and know why we’re fighting the battle.
- Rev. Dr. Prathia Hall

Prayer of the day:
God, we are your hands and feet in this world. Let the site of our works become as distinct as holy ground. Amen.

This quote by Jim Morrison serves as a stark warning against the "slow death" of
the soul that occurs when we prioritize social approval over personal truth.

The Explanation

Morrison, a symbol of 1960s counterculture and rebellion, explores the violent
psychological cost of conformity.

- The Violence of Expectations: Morrison uses the word "destroy" because
conforming isn't a passive or harmless act. To become the person someone
else wants you to be, you must actively suppress your natural instincts,
desires, and unique traits. You are essentially killing off parts of your
own identity.
- The Hollow Mask: When we live for others, we build a "version" of ourselves
that acts as a mask. Over time, if we wear that mask too long, the person
underneath can become so buried that they are forgotten or lost forever.
- A Call for Radical Authenticity: The core message is a plea for
self-loyalty. It suggests that the greatest tragedy is not being rejected by
others, but succeeding at being someone you are not. True freedom is the
courage to be yourself, even if it disappoints those who want to control
you.

As the nation grieves another shooting at a house of worship and learning — most recently at a San Diego mosque — the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship invites faith leaders and congregations not to succumb to the narrative that all we can do in response is offer “thoughts and prayers.” Instead,...
