🚨CALL TO ACTION 🚨

Raytown Ward 3 Alderman Latrice Thomas was removed from office after questions were raised about alleged tax delinquency tied not to her own record, but reportedly to disputed state tax issues connected to her husband. Thomas has stated her personal tax record was clear, and under Missouri law, disputed taxes are not the same as delinquent taxes. Yet despite these serious legal and procedural questions, her removal happened privately, without meaningful public transparency or clear due process.

KCLEAP believes accountability must apply to everyone - especially those in power. The people of Raytown elected Alderman Thomas as their representative, and voters deserve transparent governance, fair legal processes, and protection from political systems that can silence community voices without public scrutiny.

This is bigger than one seat. It is about democracy, justice, and ensuring political power is not used to disenfranchise communities.

Raytown residents and supporters: Stay engaged. Attend meetings. Demand transparency. Ask who benefits when public voices are removed without public process.

Visit https://www.raytown.mo.us/electedofficials to learn who your alderman is and how to contact them.

Raytown Board of Alderman meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday each month. The meetings are held at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 10000 E. 59th Raytown, MO 64133. Agenda, Meeting Packets and Minutes are maintained by the City Clerk.

Police have so many tools at their disposal to apprehend people without a chase, but we give them too much discretion, so they do these chases without thinking about the dangerous consequences.

On May 11, 2020, 17-year old Daniel Ruiz-Serafin was killed after fleeing police. KCPD was in the area of Ninth Street and Brighton Avenue about 5:30 p.m., looking into an assault case when they saw a vehicle wanted in connection to the case. Officers tried to stop the vehicle, but Ruiz-Serafin fled. KCPD said the vehicle appeared to lose control before crashing into a pole, killing Ruiz-Serafin, who was the only one in the vehicle.

On this Mother’s Day, Friday Night Protest and Kansas City Law Enforcement Accountability Project honors and holds close the mothers whose children were taken by police violence.

We recognize the unimaginable grief they carry, the strength it takes to keep going, and the love that never fades. Their voices, their children’s names, and their calls for justice must never be forgotten.

Today, we stand with these mothers in remembrance, in compassion, and in the ongoing fight for accountability, dignity, and change.

To every mother carrying this profound loss: we see you, we honor you, and we hold space for your pain.

On May 8, 2008, 26-year old Terry D. Davis was killed by KCPD Officer Robert Vivona. Davis was the passenger in an allegedly stolen car when police approached the vehicle. The driver drove off and Davis jumped out of the car and fled on foot. Officer Vivona caught up with him in a field near East 26th Street and Jackson Avenue. He testified that Terry pointed a gun at him, and he had no choice but to shoot and kill him. However, the mother, Angela Davis, filed a wrongful death suit arguing that KCPD officers had no reason to shoot her son. The lawsuit contended that eye witnesses saw Davis kneeling without a weapon and raised his hands to surrender before Vivona shot him. The jury rejected Davis' claims and sided with KCPD.

On May 6, 2001, 39-year old Darryl Morris was murdered by two KCPD officers after he allegedly lunged at them with a pair of scissors. At around 11:40 p.m., officers tried to stop Morris’ vehicle at 51st Street and Agnes Avenue for erratic driving, but he continued north on US 71. At Front Street and Jackson Avenue, Morris reportedly stopped, got out of his car and charged at one of the officers with scissors. The officers shot Morris when he allegedly ignored repeated warnings to drop the scissors.

While we know non-whites face the most instances of police violence, this case demonstrates how pervasive KCPD's violence really is. Their jurisdiction covers mostly low-income areas consisting of people greatly affected by a lack of resources and support. Due to this, tensions are often high; and being followed by an organization known to be dangerous is likely to trigger some people.

Our community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of 19-year-old Saveion McConnell, who was killed on May 1, 2026, after being struck with the sheriff’s vehicle and then fatally shot by a Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office deputy during an encounter in Johnson County, Missouri.

Described by his mother, family, and friends as kind-hearted, full of life, deeply loved, and someone whose smile could light up any room, Saveion was more than a headline - he was a son, a friend, and a young man with a future.

Every young person deserves safety. Every family deserves answers. And every life deserves dignity.

KCLEAP stands in solidarity with Ms. Washington as she demands justice for her son as well as his loved ones and all those calling for justice, systemic reform, and policies that center de-escalation and protect Black lives.

As his family mourns, our community must continue demanding transparency, accountability, and a full independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

We cannot accept silence. We cannot accept injustice. We must continue advocating for truth and meaningful change.

KCLEAP sends our deepest regards to the family as they navigate this devastating loss. It’s not right!!!!

On May 3, 2022, 26-year old Mekiah Harris was killed by police after leading them on a high speed chase ending in a standoff. When Harris, who was wanted in connection to a homicide, was spotted by KCPD, he lead them on a chase through KCMO and KCK. He eventually crashed and ran on foot into a back yard in Missouri, where he was eventually shot and died on the scene. An estimated 80 officers from multiple departments were involved in the chase and standoff. If 80 officers couldn't resolve this without killing someone, you have to wonder if police are the answer. If we put those same resources into mental health, or teaching conflict resolution in schools (the original shooting was allegedly over an argument about an ex-girlfriend) then perhaps multiple lives could have been saved.
