On June 14, 2018, 34-year old Robert A. White, and 33-year old Timothy D. Mosley, were both killed in an officer-involved shooting. The incident began when Mosley was told to leave the Marriott Hotel after being denied a room. The manager described Mosley as a “suspicious individual” who said he had just been released from jail and feared he was being intimidated by people with guns. Mosley then allegedly got into a golf cart next to a Barney Allis Plaza security guard and directed the security guard at gunpoint to drive over toward White. Once there, Mosley reportedly got out of the golf cart and attacked White, while the security guard ran to get help. When cops arrived, they noticed a gun displayed in the tussle and fired 17 rounds murdering both citizens.

White's parents were able to file a wrongful death lawsuit, that ended in KCPD paying them a $1.5M settlement. However, no officers were charged, and KCPD refused to accept any accountability.

On June 14, 2018, 28-year old Ashley D. Fulkerson was killed by KCPD after they were called on reports on someone walking down the street with a sword. When they approached Fulkerson, she allegedly tried to escape by entering someone's home, escaping through a window, and ultimately hiding inside a detached shed. Police tried to coax her out by deploying a robot and tear gas. Ashley continued hiding. Then, after a two-and-a-half hour standoff, officers fired 5-7 shots on Fulkerson, after they tried to enter the garage with a battering ram, and she crept out from under the door.

Witnesses described Ashley as scared, half-dressed, and seemingly having a mental health episode. Not sure how handling a sword became illegal; but KCPD literally provoked this woman to death. The unnecessary fear and harm they inflict on citizens they are paid to serve is atrocious. She could've used a friend, a mom, an uncle, a doctor; she did not need to die at the hands of police. Her mother, Janna, lost her only daughter. Today we remember Ashley D. Fulkerson.

On June 13, 2009, 26-year old Alfren Gant was a passenger in a stolen vehicle. After a chase, the vehicle crashed. KCPD alleges that they approached the vehicle and Gant pointed a gun at officers. KCPD fired, killing him. Gant's gun had no bullets in it.

KCPD should not be above the law. When regular people chase down, shoot, and then kill someone - they're instantly arrested, then the media has them painted as monsters and uncovers every unsavory detail they can find. We won't ever trust a system that allows certain people to manipulate the consequences for murder, while simultaneously prioritizing property over people's lives.

On June 13, 2020, 22-year old William Slyter was murdered by KCPD while fleeing the scene of an accident. Around 1:30 p.m. an armed carjacking occurred. When an officer spotted the vehicle and activated lights and sirens - the vehicle fled. A pursuit ended on Lister Avenue when the vehicle crashed. Slyter, who had been driving the vehicle, ran away. The officer chased Slyter, who allegedly brandished a handgun. The officer fired once and killed Slyter on the scene.

On June 9, 2023, 42-year old Kristen Fairchild and 42-year old Marcell Nelson were killed by former KCPD officer and serial killer, Blayne Newton. Newton allegedly pulled up next to Nelson's vehicle and saw him pointing a gun at another vehicle, at which point he opened fire and killed Kristen and Marcell as well as nonfatally shooting a teenager in the car. Even if what Newton alleges is true, his response was so excessive and his actions put a car full of innocent people including two children, at risk. Newton has killed 3 people since 2020, nonfatally shot another, and assaulted 3 people (including a 9 months pregnant woman) The majority of officers never fire their weapon in their whole career.

The families of Fairchild and Newton were awarded $3.5 million in a wrongful death lawsuit with KCPD in 2025. Newton left KCPD in 2026 after receiving a $50,000 payout, never being held accountable for his actions.

A statement from Marcell's sister: The ones that were to protect us took you from us. We are unsettled and patiently waiting for judgement day. We all love you Marcell Nelson not a day goes by and we don't think or cry for u. You was taken way too soon. U are missed by ur kids, siblings, nieces, nephews, ur beautiful mother, friends and many family members, ur life partner and last me 💔 God is working on me cuz he knows what u would want from me and I'm struggling but I'm still fighting this fight of justice for you. ❤️❤️ I love you baby brother. On June 8, 2016, 43-year old Carlos Garcia was killed as a bystander during a shootout during a collaboration between KCPD and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration task force. Michael J. Wilkins was the primary target of a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration task force involved in a four-hour standoff. Wilkins was eventually arrested outside before the shootout. Federal prosecutors charged Wilkins with possessing about 5 kilos of methamphetamine with intent to distribute. The need for these procedures to change is vital as drug violations do not warrant death, especially when the individual has not yet stood before a jury of their peers. Risking the lives of bystanders and compromising constitutional rights isn’t public safety.

On June 3, 2013, 16-year old Tyler W. Wilkins was murdered by KCPD. KCPD claimed that they were attempting to question Wilkins about another crime when he ran. KCPD chased him no more than 50 yards and state that he had pointed a gun at them, so they shot him in the back, killing him. Though KCPD claims that they encountered a weapon at the scene, witnesses reported that they never saw one. Wilkins' parents say they will never recover.

A $6 million settlement has been reached in the wrongful death lawsuit filed on behalf of Maria Pike and her infant daughter, Destinii Hope, who were killed by an Independence police officer in November 2024. While the legal case may be nearing its conclusion, the pain and loss experienced by their loved ones will remain for a lifetime.

Maria Pike was experiencing a mental health crisis when Independence police responded to a domestic disturbance call. A mental health co-responder had reportedly been dispatched but had not yet arrived when officers entered the apartment. The encounter ended with an officer firing the shots that killed both 34-year-old Maria and her 12-week-old daughter, Destinii.

At KCLEAP, this is more than a case we followed from afar. The Pike and Holder families were clients that we worked alongside as they navigated the unimaginable grief, trauma, and aftermath of losing Maria and Destinii. We witnessed firsthand the strength it took to seek answers, accountability, and justice while carrying an overwhelming loss.

The settlement reached in this case is reported to be one of the largest in Missouri history. Yet despite the record-setting amount, court documents state that the payment is not an admission of liability, and the City of Independence continues to deny wrongdoing by the Independence Police Department. This reflects a painful reality that many families impacted by police violence face: legal settlements may close cases, but they do not always provide accountability, acknowledgment, or meaningful change.

We hold the Pike and Holder families in our hearts and continue to honor the lives of Maria and Destinii. Their deaths are a tragic reminder that true accountability cannot end with a settlement. Lasting change requires investments in mental health crisis response, de-escalation, transparency, and systems that prioritize preserving life.
