"They'll lose it because a form didn't get turned in, a deadline passed, or in some situations, a doctor couldn't produce records fast enough."

That's Amber Christ of Legal Aid of Western Missouri, speaking to KCUR about a new federal Medicaid rule that takes effect January 1. Congress exempted people who are medically frail from the One Big Beautiful Bill Medicaid work rule. The new rule goes further, requiring proof that a condition "significantly impairs" a person's ability to work. KCUR reports that as many as 140,000 Missourians with serious and chronic health conditions could struggle to qualify.

A Missouri enrollee and several national physician organizations, including the American College of Physicians and the American Academy of Pediatrics, are now challenging the rule in court. For physicians and clinics, the paperwork burden lands on practices too. When coverage lapses over documentation, patients don't stop needing care; they end up in emergency rooms or on waiting lists for donated care, like the patients our Metro Care program serves every day.

Since this summer, federal loans for medical students have been capped at $50,000 a year and $200,000 total, and new students can no longer use Grad PLUS loans to cover the rest.

Tuition and fees at KansasCOM in Wichita run about $65,000 per year. Students are covering the difference with private loans, and many of those loans require a co-signer with strong credit. According to one KansasCOM Dean, the students hit hardest are first-generation college and medical students and students from lower-income families.

Kansas City University President Marc Hahn notes in the article that while loan limits are capped; rent, groceries, and gas are not. For some students, the question becomes whether they can stay in medical school at all. (article in the comments)

Join physicians, health partners, and community advocates for an evening celebrating charitable specialty care, health education, and workforce initiatives across Greater Kansas City.

Every year, Health Happens Here brings together the people and partnerships that make this work possible. The volunteer physicians who donate their expertise. The clinics that open their doors. The patients whose lives change because someone said yes. Proceeds support MetroCare and WyJo Care, community health education, and our Healthcare Workforce Initiative.

Hispanic Heritage Month begins today and runs through October 15. Across our region, Hispanic and Latino residents are disproportionately uninsured, and language or documentation barriers can make an already confusing healthcare system harder to navigate.

One of the goals behind our healthcare workforce initiative is building a workforce that reflects the patients it serves, both in language and in lived experience.

Twenty five years ago today, our country changed. We pause this morning to remember the nearly three thousand lives lost on September 11, and the first responders and healthcare workers who ran toward danger that day and in the years since.

It's been 25 years since the 9/11 terror attacks on America. On Friday, the nation will remember those lost on that fateful day and take a moment of silence in their memory.

On this quarter-century anniversary of the attacks, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum will add a seventh moment of silence to honor those who have died of illnesses related to their time at or near the World Trade Center site.
