Check out today’s Wednesday Word from FCA’s Daily Impact Play:

It’s common for athletes to be called out for mistakes or weaknesses. It’s part of the game. But, when coaches emphasize these too much it diminishes confidence and effort.

One of the great things about God is that He knows us and understands us. He is for us and not against us. He knows the weaknesses we face. When we struggle and face difficult things, when we make mistakes, He is right there with us to help us. He doesn’t call out the mistake or weaknesses and condemn us for them. He is a kind, gracious, merciful Father and God. Paul writes to the Galatians (and us) to give them some encouragement of what to do when criticism and hard things abound. He tells us to keep doing the right things. There is a good result, no matter how long it takes, when we stay the course and we keep doing the right things. Keep working hard in the midst of hard times.

The verse also tells us to not grow tired of doing good. It is always easier to give up, to stop and quit when it gets hard. Sometimes we just want to try again later. It does seem that in the middle of difficulty that we get tired and weary. But Paul tells us to keep doing good because good is coming. He uses an agricultural term: reap. A farmer reaps when the crop is ready. We need to keep doing good until God tells us the time to harvest is here.

When you feel like the criticism is piling on, keep listening to the voice of God. Keep working hard and do the right things. Don’t give up. You will reap at the right time if you do not give up.

God keeps bringing the right people to the table! 🙌

🤝 Luke & Chris had the opportunity to meet Foster alongside board member Scott. Foster is passionate about speaking into the hearts of youth around mental health and we’re excited to see how God might use that connection with FCA!

🏌️ BJ has a huge heart for FCA and served on the GKC Board in the ’90s and early 2000s. After retiring in March, BJ felt called to step into a larger role with FCA and he’ll be joining our KC East Board next month!

Grateful for open doors and all God will do through them!

An athlete of mine recently graduated high school. She spent her whole life in dance and cheerleading. From the time she was a young girl up to graduation, she has participated in sports. At church, she recently told me how misplaced she felt. She wasn’t a highschooler anymore but not yet a college student. And for most of her life, her schedule was dictated by cheer and dance practices, competitions and games. Now she’d move on to working and going to class full time.

Some athletes go on to compete at advanced levels, but most athletes will close the door on their sport once their high school career ends. Not many people talk about the emotional grief of “aging out” of sports and losing that deeply ingrained identity we’ve built for ourselves through it, but even the author of this psalm could relate to the fear of becoming irrelevant in his old age.

The good news is that we will never age out of God’s faithfulness or His love for us. Our sport will leave us, along with our stamina, endurance and our physical capabilities but God never will. Deuteronomy 7:9 tells us that God is a faithful God who keeps His gracious covenant loyalty for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commands. Think of how long and vast a thousand generations is. And yet He is loyal to each one. And every single day of the lives of those generations, He provides fresh and new mercies every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23).

The last part of Psalm 71:9 speaks of man’s strength failing. He said, “as my strength fails,” not “if it fails;” the psalmist knew man’s strength diminishes with old age, but God’s strength doesn’t. As aging athletes, it is understood that our bodies will naturally decline. But we don’t have to fear that when God is our refuge (Psalm 71:7). He won’t pass over us for a younger, more viable athlete. He takes us in His arms as the Good Shepherd would an aged sheep and He intently cares for our needs.
