Hayl’s Exotics and Rescue Team

Hayl’s Exotics and Rescue Team We accept surrenders of small animals/exotics, reptiles, birds & more! Any necessary vet care is provided. (Not currently 501c3 due to board member shortage)

We then work to find them a suitable, responsible forever home if they don’t stay here at HEaRT.

The only appropriate way to handle that goldfish you won at the fair!

We recently attended the Missouri state fair in Sedalia, MO and one of the games was giving goldfish and koi as the prize. 1 ball won a goldfish and 8 balls won a koi. They had this elaborate setup with containers and koi/goldfish in tanks at each corner of the game display. I decided to play the game and see what the protocol was for the winner. Once I “won” (I made one ball out of a basket of balls into a cup) my little comet goldfish was fished out of a trash bin, already pre bagged and handed to me. The carney had to pull 3-4 dead bagged fish before producing my little one that was barely alive. No plastic container. No care advice. He simply stated “that ones swimming, so you’ve got a good one” I asked “how much can I pay for a koi?” He said “too much”

I witnessed several people win these little fish and just handed a plastic bag and essentially a “good luck, thanks for your $10+” 🤦🏻‍♀️

Comet goldfish commonly live 30+ years. Koi, significantly longer. That .69 fish you win at the fair, could very well be passed down to your kids if cared for properly. Heaven forbid anyone actually make 8balls. I asked what happens if no one wins a koi? The carney explained that they get “returned” to where they were purchased from 🙄 😒 I’ve seen these animals literally tossed in the trash after the fairs are over like garbage. I decided to play their little game hoping to give at least one a chance. Most people see a cute little fish and no commitment or are given the complete wrong care advice. Being told they’ll only grow to their environment. Truth be told, these fish grow no matter what, if proper care is provided. A 75 gallon tank is even way too small; and their cheap price draws in a lot of inexperienced caregivers. Hopefully, one day, this won’t be a thing anymore. But for now, welcome Mo to our little rescue and we hope you enjoy this 75gallon aquarium while your pond is being constructed for 2027 🩵

Should I take bets on how long it’ll take three ferrets to turn this into a complete disaster? 🤣🩵

Dump of some of our newbies! These guys are all with us permanently so they are not up for adoption. But we do have 3 leopard geckos and a corn snake currently on the hunt for some responsible homes.

I will post updated photos of adoptable critters tomorrow 🩵

Long time, no post! I promise we are still up and operational. My personal job has just been kicking my butt lately. Spring/Summer is our busiest time of year so I do apologize for being quiet!
Little update for this little rescue: we found our third member, are working on finishing up our bylaws and will have the proper paperwork filed by the end of the week to be OFFICIALLY non profit 🤩

We also found a new vet finally! I’ve been bouncing around to a few different ones since we had to stop going to our previous one due to them switching to corporate. I’m so excited to keep the dream alive and grow this little operation.
That’s all for now!
Enjoy this photo of one of our newest members, Ash; the roborovski hamster. 🐹

Just over 2 weeks worth of food for 11 sugar gliders 🩵

I was freezing in ice cube trays, but found measuring out daily portions in these 8oz containers and thawing one big portion the night before has worked soooo much better. Way more convenient!

In case we have any followers that would like to contribute but aren’t sure exactly what we need the most:
We just added these to our Amazon wish list! We could really use a couple more for the newer leopard geckos humid hides that are coming out of quarantine. 🩵

We still have one more baby corn snake, two juvenile corn snakes, and one leopard gecko available. We will also have a bearded dragon and one more leopard gecko soon.
We appreciate the folks who choose adoption beyond measure!🦎 🐍

I guess I need to start posting my feed and vet bills for the people who think I’m making any kind of profit off of this 😅
Not to mention all the money spent on enclosures and enrichment.

Yes, we charge a very small adoption fee; which goes into a separate account we pull from to pay for food, vet visits and anything else for the animals. I have my own big kid job to pay for my own things + supplement HEaRT. This is and has always has been a passion of mine that I have finally been able to make a reality. That’s it.

Thanks for reading 🩵
