In the Argentine neighborhood of Wyandotte County, The Hub has quietly become a place where connection drives change. Since opening in July 2020, the nonprofit has focused less on traditional service models and more on a simple but powerful idea: the people who live in the community already hold the...

**ESPAÑOL ABAJO**

Hey Neighbors of Argentine, meet Flor!

You may know Flor as your sister, aunt, great aunt, favorite Columbian cook, church member at The House of God for All Nations, or friendly neighbor.

26 years ago, Flor came to Argentine to visit a friend. She fell in love with the community and affordability so a month later she moved here from California! Flor is originally from Columbia and comes from a large family where she is the only sister out with 8 brothers. She grew up surrounded by her brothers who took good care of her and served as her protectors. They wouldn’t let her smoke or drink and her mother would make them do a lot of chores around the house before they were allowed to go out on the weekends.

When Flor was living in Columbia, she worked as an assistant in a dental office. She ended up falling in love with one of the dentists in the office and they ended up getting married. After their marriage dissolved, Flor moved to California to live near one of her brothers.

In the US, Flor also found new careers through working in restaurants like McDonalds and Taco Bell as well as working as a cleaner at banks. She is now enjoying retirement and has lots of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews who live in the Kansas City area. One of her favorite things to do is to cook for them. Cooking really is one of her primary passions. She cooks traditional Columbian food–like fried plantains, rice, tostadas, yucca and potatoes– for her family, but when it is just her, she likes to eat healthier. She cooks a lot of vegetables, chicken, and fish when it is just her. She even makes green juices.

When she is not entertaining her family and cooking for them, Flor likes to clean her house–she prides herself on maintaining a clean home. She walks every day and cares for her body and image. Flor’s faith is a big part of her life. She used to be Catholic, but she now attends a Protestant church on a regular basis.

To Flor, being a good neighbor means caring for the place where you live and being in relationship with the people around you. If she could share her passions and gifts with the community, she would do so by working with kids and talking with them about the importance of education. She was so grateful for the ways that her parents and family shaped her life that she would like to pass that on to the next generation in the community.

We are so grateful to have Flor in the community!

______________

We recently had a very special visit from with students from who organized a food drive to collect an offering for our community market. While here, they toured the space, asked meaningful questions, and gave back to the market and kitchen by preparing things for neighbors to visit. Thank you for your curiosity and gifts!
