Hey Neighbors of Argentine, meet RJ!
You may know RJ as your only brother, your dad, your fellow Seabees, friend from the VFW, former owner of The Matchbox, neighbor who is always mowing around the Welcome to Argentine signs or “just a guy”.
RJ has deep roots in the Argentine neighborhood. His dad was actually born in a house off of Metropolitan Ave and his dad went to Argentine High School. RJ’s grandparents stayed in the neighborhood throughout his life and he always came back to visit. RJ bought his house in Argentine 28 years ago and he is so grateful to continue to call this community home. He’s an original resident of Wyandotte County who grew up in Strawberry Hill and graduated from Wyandotte High School. RJ grew up with 4 sisters and they all still call the Kansas City area home.
After high school, RJ served two tours in Vietnam as a part of the Seabees. He started in the Navy and went through Marine bootcamp as he joined this construction battalion. RJ’s cousin was also in the service and, even though they served in different units, they saw each other in Vietnam. RJ remains committed to building community with other veterans and he is an active participant at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). He wants to raise attention to the experiences that he, and fellow Vietnam veterans had, especially their exposure to Agent Orange and the corresponding health implications.
When he came back from Vietnam, RJ attended UMKC and entered the restaurant industry. He ended up owning and operating restaurants across the metro area: Dos Hombres (several locations), Thirsty’s (Westport and River Market) and The Matchbox. The Matchbox always held a special place in his heart due to the vibe and style.
RJ eventually sold his restaurants and now he volunteers to mow properties throughout the Argentine neighborhood. He is committed to making sure Argentine looks nice and is a welcoming place for all neighbors. When he is not riding mowers, he enjoys riding horses–English Saddle Style. He goes down to Louisburg regularly to ride his favorite horse named Twister. RJ is also working to fix up a house in Argentine as well as to design a KC Heart to remember veterans. He’ll donate the KC Heart to the VFW when it's done.
RJ also enjoys spending time with his two sons–Miles and Davis–as well as his dog Dutch. He is proud to be from Argentine and his favorite thing about living in this community is that he is surrounded by people who work hard for their families and for the community.
Most of all, RJ wants to be known as just a guy from Argentine who cares for the community. We are so grateful to have RJ in Argentine!

¡Hola, vecinos de Argentine! ¡Les presentamos a RJ!
Tal vez conozcas a RJ como tu único hermano, tu padre, tu compañero de los Seabees, tu amigo del VFW, el antiguo dueño de The Matchbox, el vecino que siempre está cortando el césped alrededor de los letreros de "Bienvenidos a Argentine" o simplemente "solamente un chico".
RJ tiene profundas raíces en la vecindad de Argentine. Su padre nació en una casa cerca de Metropolitan Ave y estudió en la preparatoria Argentine. Los abuelos de RJ vivieron en la vecindad durante toda su vida y él siempre volvía de visita. RJ compró su casa en Argentine hace 28 años y está muy agradecido de seguir considerando a esta comunidad su hogar. Es originario del condado de Wyandotte, creció en Strawberry Hill y se graduó de la preparatoria Wyandotte. RJ creció con cuatro hermanas, y todas ellas aún viven en el área de Kansas City.
Después de la preparatoria, RJ sirvió dos veces en Vietnam como parte de los Seabees. Comenzó en la Marina y completó el entrenamiento básico de los Marines al unirse a este batallón de construcción. El primo de RJ también estuvo en el ejército y, aunque sirvieron en unidades diferentes, se vieron en Vietnam. RJ sigue comprometido con la creación de comunidad con otros veteranos y participa activamente en la organización Veteranos de Guerras Extranjeras (VFW). Desea llamar la atención sobre las experiencias que él y sus compañeros veteranos de Vietnam vivieron, especialmente su exposición al Agente Naranja y las consecuencias para la salud que esto tuvo.
Al regresar de Vietnam, RJ estudió en la UMKC y entró en la industria de los restaurantes. Llegó a ser propietario y administrador de restaurantes en toda el área metropolitana: fue propietario de Dos Hombres (con varias ubicaciones), Thirsty’s (en Westport y River Market) y The Matchbox. Este último siempre ocupó un lugar especial en su corazón por su ambiente y estilo.
Con el tiempo, RJ vendió sus restaurantes y ahora dedica su tiempo como voluntario a cortar el césped de diversas propiedades en el vecindario de Argentine. Está comprometido con mantener a Argentine limpio, atractivo y acogedor para todos los vecinos. Cuando no está manejando una podadora, disfruta montar a caballo al estilo inglés. Viaja con frecuencia a Louisburg para montar a su caballo favorito, llamado Twister. Además, RJ está trabajando en la remodelación de una casa en Argentine y en el diseño de un KC Heart en honor a los veteranos. Cuando esté terminado, lo donará a la VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars).
RJ también disfruta pasar tiempo con sus dos hijos, Miles y Davis, así como con su perro, Dutch. Se siente orgulloso de ser de Argentine y lo que más le gusta de vivir en esta comunidad es estar rodeado de personas que trabajan arduamente por sus familias y por el bienestar de la comunidad.
Sobre todo, RJ quiere ser conocido simplemente como un hombre de Argentine que se preocupa por su comunidad. ¡Estamos muy agradecidos de contar con RJ como parte de Argentine!
