Joe and Nikki were having one of their wonderfully random conversations one day about what some of their favorite older television shows might have looked like if they had included more neurodivergent characters. Naturally, this led them to create an imaginary episode of Saved by the Bell, from Nikki’s generation, featuring a neurodivergent student.
One of their favorite moments was Zack Morris looking directly into the camera and saying, “Neuro-what now?” They both had a good laugh because it is totally something Zack would say, but his question is actually a good one.
Neurodivergent describes a person whose brain processes information, communicates, learns, focuses, moves, or experiences the world differently from what society generally expects. The term may include people with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, intellectual and developmental disabilities, Tourette syndrome, and other neurological differences.
Representation matters. When neurodivergent people are included in our stories, schools, workplaces, activities, and communities, it helps create a world where different ways of thinking and experiencing life are understood and valued.
Time out! Different does not mean less.
Okay, time in. And now Zack Morris knows too.
