It all started when Renda’s sister, Rhonda Sloop, was diagnosed with breast cancer in August of 2007. It was a shock for the whole family, considering there was no family history of cancer. Rhonda was going for a routine mammogram and hadn't noticed anything odd. The thoughts and emotions that come with cancer, put a family on a roller coaster ride. Cancer can make a person start living their life
a little differently. Rhonda’s strength has been amazing. Her story has inspired us to start this exhibit. We have been working with many breast cancer survivors, each of whom have a unique story. If their stories can help encourage, inspire, or educate one person about this disease it will make the journey worthwhile. We read each survivor’s story and tried to portray their journey and how breast cancer has “enriched” their lives. With our business, Irresistible Portraits, it just felt right to put a face with these stories and let our art speak for itself. Our sincere wish for this foundation, “Focused on a Cure,” will be to urge every woman to start self breast exams and mammograms early. Do not wait until the age of forty. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Early detection saves lives. It saved Rhonda’s life and it may save your own. Throughout the past year, the Sloop family has kept Proverbs 24:32 in their hearts: “I applied my heart to what I observed and learned a lesson from what I saw.”
