🌟A Voice for Others: McCall Schunke’s Path from KCC to Speech-Language Pathology🌟

McCall Schunke grew up in Watseka, where close-knit community values and a strong work ethic shaped her early years. After high school, she enrolled at Kankakee Community College and took her first steps toward a career that would help others find their voice.

“I had already completed a good number of dual credit classes through my high school and KCC,” said McCall. “That experience gave me momentum. I was comfortable in the learning environment and confident that I could succeed there.”

McCall earned an Associate of Arts degree from KCC in 2020, and transferred to Southern Illinois University–Edwardsville. After completing a bachelor’s degree in communication sciences and disorders, she remained at SIUE to earn a master’s degree in speech-language pathology. Today, McCall is an elementary school speech-language pathologist in Rantoul School District 137.

We’re proud to support innovation that sets KCC apart — one of the only community colleges in Illinois with this advanced technology!

Thank you to Alderman Dave Baron - Kankakee 2nd Ward, KCC Foundation Board Member, for capturing and sharing this exciting moment.

On display at yesterday's KCC Foundation Board meeting was the newest piece of teaching technology -- Anatomage -- a life-sized automated touch screen that allows interaction with a virtual dissection of human anatomy.

Shown upright here, the Antatomage "table" typically lies flat and provides a supplemental educational tool for students of physical therapy, nursing, and even law enforcement.

Kankakee Community College is one of the few, and potentially only, community colleges in Illinois currently with an Anatomage table.

🌟From Uncertainty to Nursing Excellence🌟

Immediately after high school, Rodney Peña Jr. embarked on a path he had carefully planned: West Point Military Academy. During his first year, though, Rodney realized the military lifestyle wasn’t a fit for him. Resigning from West Point left him with an uncertain future. Meeting his future wife, Crystal, changed things.

Crystal, a 2005 KCC graduate, encouraged Rodney to take advantage of its programs.

“Meeting my wife changed everything,” Rodney said. “She believed I was too smart not to be in school, and she pushed me to go back. That’s how I ended up at KCC.”
