Habilitat Hawaii

Habilitat Hawaii Habilitat - Place of Change / School of Survival Habilitat Hawai'i is a long-term residential treatment facility located on the island of Oahu in Hawaii.

Founded in 1971, by Vinny Marino, the organization is dedicated to helping individuals struggling with addiction and other behavioral health issues to overcome their challenges and build the skills and resilience they need to lead healthy and productive lives. Habilitat Hawai'i is based on a holistic approach to treatment that focuses on the individual as a whole, addressing not just the symptoms

of addiction and other mental health issues, but also the underlying causes and contributing factors. The program incorporates a range of therapeutic approaches, including individual and group counseling, experiential learning, and life skills training, to help participants develop the tools and coping mechanisms they need to navigate the challenges of recovery. In addition to its core treatment program, Habilitat Hawai'i also offers a range of support services to help participants transition back into the community and rebuild their lives. These services include job training and employment assistance, educational support, and housing assistance. One of the key features of Habilitat Hawai'i is its emphasis on community involvement and support. The organization works closely with local businesses, organizations, and community leaders to provide opportunities for participants to give back to their community and develop the sense of purpose and belonging that is so essential to long-term recovery. Overall, Habilitat Hawai'i is a vital resource for individuals seeking support and guidance on their journey towards recovery and healing. The organization's commitment to a holistic and personalized approach to treatment, combined with its focus on community engagement, makes it a powerful force for positive change in the lives of those it serves.

Watching Growth Unfold 🌺
One of the most rewarding parts of what we do at Habilitat is watching growth unfold.
Every resident comes into the program with their own story, their own challenges, and their own path. Along the way, there will be lessons, mistakes, victories, and moments that challenge us. What matters is continuing to move forward and becoming better than we were yesterday.
And sometimes, we get to witness that growth in the most meaningful ways—like seeing a resident reconnect with their family and share a moment of happiness, pride, and connection.
It’s a reminder that change doesn’t always happen overnight. Sometimes you have to step back and see just how far someone has come.
That’s what makes Habilitat The Place of Change—getting to watch people grow, push through, and become the person they are capable of becoming. ā¤ļøšŸŒŗ

The Golden Rule:
How we treat others can be a reflection of where we are in life. And the truth is, when we’re figuring life out, we aren’t always in the best place. There may not be structure, order, or even a clear understanding of who we are yet.
There’s no perfect formula to the Golden Rule. It’s not that you first learn to respect yourself, and then suddenly respect for others falls into place. But if we expect to be treated with kindness, dignity, and respect, we have to be willing to give that same respect in return.
One of our concepts here at Habilitat is, ā€œSometimes it’s better to understand than to be understood.ā€ And that ties deeply into the Golden Rule. Sometimes it isn’t about being heard. There will always be a time and a place for our voice to be heard. But learning to stop, listen, and genuinely try to understand someone else’s needs, experiences, and perspective opens our minds. It helps us see beyond ourselves, adapt, and grow.
That’s something we’re learning on this journey.
No one said it would be easy. Challenging days still come, even when we’re making the right choices. We’re human. We’re going to fall short, get frustrated, and have days when we struggle.
But our personal struggles don’t give us permission to compromise the way we treat others.
We may not get it right every day, but if we continue to strive to live by the Golden Rule—to treat others the way we want to be treated—and learn to understand before demanding to be understood, we’re becoming better people, one day at a time.

Our Culinary Arts Vocational Training Program is leveling up! šŸ‘šŸ½
Our residents are putting their training into action as they bag and tag 120 Meals on Wheels lunches using our new Oliver conveyor belt machine. What used to take much longer can now be done with precision and efficiency—all 120 meals sealed and tagged in just 8 minutes!
It’s more than a new machine. It’s another opportunity for our residents to learn new skills, gain hands-on experience, and prepare for life beyond Habilitat.
Work hard. Learn hard. Keep leveling up. 🌺

Today we celebrated another incredible milestone as 8 Habilitat residents graduated from their Data Analytics course, earning their Participatory Community Analyst Certification, along with certificates in Excel Fundamentals and DataCamp.
Through our partnership with Chaminade University of Honolulu, residents were challenged to think beyond the classroom. Each participant selected an area of personal interest, analyzed data using statistics, charts, and trend analysis, and created a 4–6 slide presentation to share their findings and insights.
At Habilitat, we believe recovery is about more than overcoming addiction—it's about creating opportunities to learn, grow, and build a future filled with purpose. We're proud to partner with organizations that help empower our residents through education, practical skills, and experiences that prepare them for success long after they leave our program.
Congratulations to all eight graduates on this outstanding accomplishment. Every new skill learned is another step toward a stronger future, and we're honored to be part of that journey.
A heartfelt mahalo to Chaminade University of Honolulu for investing in our residents and helping make this opportunity possible.
