“Before our collaboration with Sierra Club of Hawaiʻi, I knew very little about Liquid Natural Gas (LNG), the stateʻs LNG agenda, and its potential threats to our islands. I find it quite bizarre that students are not very educated about the environmental damages of imported resources and how it negatively impacts both our ‘āina and kaiāulu— especially since we live on islands that were once self-sustaining.
When I was coming up with design ideas for opposing LNG, I wanted to express the collective intelligence, awareness, and adaptability of our people here in Hawai’i. I ended up drawing a ginormous he’e (octopus) protecting our islands from the LNG ship. In Hawaiian culture, the he’e represents the ocean god Kanaloa.” Koda
