As a mom, one of the hardest parts of parenting is knowing I can’t be with my girls every second of every day.

I can’t walk them into every room or protect them from every difficult person they’ll meet. At some point, they have to spread their wings a little and start making decisions on their own. (which is lowkey terrifying tbh)

That’s why opportunities like this matter so much to me.

And yes, I absolutely want my girls to be tough. I want them to be confident. I want them to know how to protect themselves and hold their own if they ever have to.

But I also want them to have good judgment. To trust their instincts. To know when to walk away, when to speak up, when to ask for help, and when something just doesn’t feel right.

The goal isn’t to raise kids who are scared of the world. The goal is to raise kids who are prepared for it.

Kids who can think for themselves, make good decisions, and carry themselves with confidence even when I’m not there.

I’ll be honest, we’re in a tough season of parenting right now. There have been mistakes, hard conversations, and moments where I’ve had to remind myself that my job isn’t to react to every mistake. My job is to help guide them through it. (easier said than done tho)

Because growing up means making mistakes. And parenting means having the patience to teach through those moments, even when it’s hard.

MAHALO NUI to our Salish, Pend d’Oreille and Kootenai relatives from the Flathead Reservation for hosting us this weekend in your beautiful home. We had the privilege of hearing their stories and honoring MMIR awareness day with them.

While Natives make up 7% of the demographic of Montana, they are disproportionately represented as 25% of the missing persons database. Coupled with the lack of action by law enforcement and coverage by the media, the MMIR epidemic continues to go widely unaddressed. Our mission as a hui has always been to raise awareness and end the MMIW/MMIR epidemic. Hearing the voices of the mothers who continue to fight for justice for their daughters inspires us like no other. They are true wahine toa ✊🏽.

PSA!!!

The aftermath of the Maui wildfires have highlighted the fact that domestic violence survivors and their families are being disproportionately impacted. The impact is evident in areas such as housing and access to financial and health services, among others. With these ongoing issues on Maui and throughout Hawaiʻi, we must unite to support and uplift our women nation and native communities.

For those in Hawai’i, please consider attending the HSCADV Conference on Gender HI-Based Violence, “Illuminating Gender Inequity in Crises: Breakthroughs to Liberation”. It’s a one and a half day event from May 16-17 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Honolulu, HI.

I’m honored to represent the Northern Arapaho tribe on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming. I’m grateful for the opportunity to go to Hawaii for the women’s retreat because it’s educational, healing, and I’ll build relationships with other indigenous women; I also want to take some time to slow down and enjoy myself.
