At the end of 2025, we decided to plan an HPS 25th Anniversary Celebration to coincide with Auntie Nonaʻs birthday on August 15th. Our gala luncheon was to be on Saturday, the 16th, and had this been anything of a “normal” year, we would have spent her birthday today in final preparation to be with everyone tomorrow to celebrate the past quarter century of oral history and cultural heritage preservation work she inspired.

Well, 2025 didnʻt go as planned with the goings-on in DC among other things, all of which necessitated the need to pivot, and so we stepped away from a big public gala celebration toward smaller huakaʻi with our core team and deep strategic planning which began last year but which became even more critical with the major changes that lay ahead for so many non-profits.

On this Friday night, as Auntie Nonaʻs birth day comes to a close, we remain grateful each day to our core for her grounding, inspiration, kindness, leadership, and enduring love.

Hauʻoli Lā Hānau e ʻAnakē Nona! We have adopted your love of orange and butterflies!

A most unique concert is happening this Saturday evening at Leeward Theatre. Led by esteemed Kumu Māhealani Uchiyama, the mele inoa project - Pōpoloheno - brings to light through music (and hula) the stories and contributions of black people in Hawaiʻi in both ancient and modern times that we have not widely had the pleasure and privilege of learning about.

As perhaps the only Africa-descended lineally-recognized Kumu Hula, Mahealani is also an award-winning composer and founder and leader of Hālau Ka Ua Tuahine in Berkeley for over 30 years.

She is THE perfect person to bring such a visionary effort to life. Kumu enlisted some of her talented friends (see flier!) to write mele with her about these mostly little-known figures in our islandsʻ history.

This incredible set of artists will be performing together onstage this Saturday in a most unique concert! Come take in the history, artistry, and music of Pōpoloheno.

Hula Preservation Society is launching a new Hula Kiʻi youth exhibit at Capitol Modern this Friday, June 6th, 2025.

In-person kickoff event is from 5:00-6:00pm with Kumu Hula Auliʻi Mitchell, Hālau Kū Māna New Century Public Charter School, and the HPS Team.

Kumu Auliʻi is the foremost expert on carved images of the hula, and he has spent the last semester working with Papa Hana Noʻeau (grade 10) to expand their understanding of and experience with this still rare form of hula and storytelling.

Come see the 20 newly birthed Hula Kiʻi at Capitol Modern starting this Friday, June 6th! Exhibit runs through the end of July 2025. Capitol Modern admission is always free and the museum is open daily except Sundays.

This project was supported in part by the Hawaii Tourism Authority and the Atherton Family Foundation. Mahalo to our partners at Capitol Modern, the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, and Hālau Kū Māna Public Charter School.

Come join us next Wednesday in Hilo for this wonderful Hula Kiʻi program featuring nā Kumu Hula and dynamic duo Tangarō and Kekuhi!

Wednesday, April 23rd, 1:00-2:30pm

"He Ki'i, He Aka: Reawakening Hula Ki'i in Shadow and Light" features the return of Kekuhi Keali'ikanaka'oleohaililani and Taupouri Tangaro (aka Kaipo Frias) as they delve further into the enigmatic world of Hula Ki'i. This second offering expands on their 2024 presentation by exploring underrepresented expressions of Hula Ki'i, particularly shadow dancing—both literal and symbolic—as practiced in ancient Hawai'i. From the sacred legacy of Kapoulakina'u and Kewelani to the secular, satirical ki'i of the 19th century, this presentation honors the diverse genealogies of image dances. Through story, chant, and movement, Kekuhi and Tangaro invite audiences into a deeper conversation with image, form, and reflection—into the spaces where shadows speak and spirits are made visible."
Program is free, sponsored by ʻImiloa Astronomy Center. Limited seats available - use link below to reserve!

ONE WEEK LEFT to experience the Hula Kiʻi Exhibit at Capitol Modern! We have been so fortunate to bring this curated collection of 16 kiʻi and their stories to the beautiful glass cases on the ground floor, since June 2024.

This happened thanks to a partnership with the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and kiʻi makers Mauli Ola Cook, Auliʻi Mitchell, Kaponoai Molitau, Maile Loo, Auntie Leonani Akau Hagen, Keau George, Lilinoe Lindsey, and the late masters Nona Beamer and John Keola Lake.

The exhibit is there through TUESDAY APRIL 15th. Capitol Modern is open from 10a-4p every day but Sunday. Come down and check it out before this current specially-gathered collection is gone.

We have some exciting plans for a special summer kiʻi-related exhibit featuring student work, so stay tuned!!!
