Day 2 of our Huakaʻi Waiheʻe started off with a walking tour of Kapoho and a morning session at the base of Mauna ʻihi at the hālau waʻa of Kealakaʻihonua. There students connected with HANONA who shared mele ʻāina, cultural practices, and the restoration stories tied to this significant place. From there we headed to the loʻi of Paeloko with ʻOhana ʻAiwohi, where students learned the moʻolelo of Maui and other legendary kāʻao and worked hard clearing nearly three patches of weeds! 🌿 After all that hard work, the sun came out just in time for students to head back to camp, clean up, and jump in the ocean. 🌊 A huge mahalo to everyone who made these two days unforgettable. Until next time! ⛺️🤙🏾

Come rain or shine, she go!☀️🌧️ Last week, our Huakaʻi Waiheʻe summer program kicked off at Waiheʻe Coastal Dunes and Wetlands Refuge with Hawaiʻi Land Trust, after a rainy set up students dove into hands-on restoration and conservation work. Students spent time listening to historical and ecological stories of the site, propagating ʻākulikuli along the coastline and creating cordage out of gathered ʻahuʻawa. After the clouds cleared, the sun came back out and the day only got better. DLNR’s Division of Aquatic Resources joined us for a coastal monitoring session, including beach seining along the shoreline and water quality testing. To close the night, master navigator Kalā Baybayan-Tanaka from Hui O Waʻa Kaulua led students in a stargazing lesson, learning about the story map of the sky and which constellations guide us home ✨ Mahalo to HILT, DAR, and HOWK for an unforgettable first day!

Earlier this month, two of our Zero Waste interns traveled to Kauaʻi for the Zero Waste Youth Convergence! 🌎🌱
Over the week, students from across the pae ʻāina came together to deepen their understanding of sustainability and build upon the pilina created during the first convergence back in October. From visiting ʻāina-based organizations like Kūkulu Kumuhana O Anahola & Kumano I Ke Ala o Makaweli to learning from community partners like Compost Kauaʻi & Purple Maiʻa Foundation, our students gained valuable knowledge and ideas to bring back to their own schools and communities.
Mahalo nui to everyone who helped make this convergence possible! Weʻre excited to see what these ʻōpio can accomplish next. 🤍

Lunch will be provided for in-person participants. Please RSVP by June 24th for in-person or Zoom attendance.

Last Saturday we were back at Ag Fest and the numbers speak for themselves! 🌱 On May 30th our zero waste team helped divert 92% of event waste from the landfill. That’s 492.9 lbs of foodware composted, 379.3 lbs of food waste composted, and only 93.5 lbs of trash sent to the landfill. We are so proud of this result and grateful to everyone who supported our zero waste efforts at this year’s Ag Fest! 🙌

We are proud to share that two student films from our Huliau Film Program have been selected for the inaugural Wailuku Film Festival! 🎬 Resilient Reefs and Nā K**a Lei o Hawaiʻi were both created by Maui youth and will be screened at this year’s festival. We are so proud of our student filmmakers and grateful for the opportunity to share their stories with the community!
The Wailuku Film Festival runs June 17–21, 2026 in historic Wailuku Town, bringing together five days of storytelling, panels, and events celebrating film as a bridge between cultures. Our student films will screen as part of the Future of Film: High School Shorts block on June 18th, free and open to the public at the Naylor Theater. Come out and support our young filmmakers and check out the full festival lineup at wailukufilm.com! 🙌🎥
A special congratulations to our student filmmakers: Hopoe Kan Hai, Kawaihua Pellegrino, Keola Momoa-Smythe Pomale, August Eyerman, Makyah Kotter, Myrna Zsofia Mesler, and Autumn Hoida. We are so proud of you! 🌿

Last but not least we recognize Terrance Davis! Terrance graduated from Hawaiʻi Tech Academy and recently completed our Spring Lab in partnership with Hisako Film Lab. After 5 months of learning the production process, Terrance and his group wrote, filmed, and edited their narrative film "After the Fires," a short film following a family learning to navigate life after the Lahaina fires.

Terrance shares a favorite memory from the Spring Lab: "I'd say my favorite memory from the Spring Lab would be when we were filming for our short film and one of our actors messed up a line and the entire room laughed. Although it was a simple mistake we couldn't help but laugh due to how comfortable we were laughing and joking with each other."

As Terrance heads into the next chapter, he will be pursuing an electrician apprenticeship. Terrance, the best is yet to come, congratulations! ⚡️🎬 🩵

This one's for Keola Momoa-Smythe Pomale! Keola is a 2026 graduate of Maui High School and participated in our 2025 Fall Filmmaking Program, where her group created Nā K**a Lei o Hawaiʻi, a film featuring interviews with young Hawaiians sharing their perspectives on the revival of Hawaiian culture and practices, and how these traditions continue to shape their relationship with ʻāina. The film premiered at the Be Reel Film Festival at the Iao Theater and has also been selected for the Wailuku Film Festival!

Keola shares: "One of my favorite Huliau memories was watching films from previous years and seeing how creative and meaningful everyone's stories were. It inspired me to appreciate how film can connect people and tell important stories from different perspectives. Through Huliau, I also learned a lot about filmmaking and storytelling, especially how different camera shots, angles, and editing choices can completely change the emotion and impact of a scene."

We wish you all the best as you continue your studies at UH Maui pursuing Business and Psychology. We are so proud of you Keola, congratulations! 🎥🗂️ 💜
